Hi all, I tanned a grey fox with lutan. I am currently oiling and breaking to soften it up a bit. Once I am satisfied with the texture can I wash the fur to get the oil residue out and just let it dry? will it dry stiff, will it have to be broken and scraped again as it dries? Any help greatly appreciated!! Thank you

A method that Bruce would say is get a garbage bag, add some hardwood sawdust, a cup of mineral sprits and place the skin in there and shake it around till it got cleaned. There’s no need to wash it then.
If you wash it and the skin gets wet, then yes it will need to be rebroken

Thank You Mr. Kotula! would like oak chips used for grilling/smoking work, or does it have to be fine sawdust? Just dont know where I can get dry sawdust this time of year.

Fine sawdust! Chips won’t cut it but good for smoking etc.

Check our tannery suppliers here or some fine cob corn will also work
