No, will not work

 

You' re asking if you can pour a foam form from a foam mold. Don't waste your time or money on all that foam. Since you have no experience with mold making of any kind, you will not be successful at what you're asking, and it's unheard of to pour a foam form in a foam mold, you must first learn the principles of mold making and what particular molding materials, like plaster or fiberglass to get the kind of results you want. You're trying to shortcut a process that can't be short-cutted and still produce a usable mannikin. Either buy a ready made form or learn to make a proper mold.

Get a back issue copy of Taxidermy Today, July/August 2020. There's an article titled "Squeeze Casting - An Old Technique on page 29. (Ph. 800-851-7955). It explains how to mold a carcass from which you can produce a form in foam or paper. If you intend to continue in taxidermy, you will have to school yourself up, educate yourself before you decide to make or save money at it.

 

Yes you can, When you get your mold cut off in two pieces, sand the inside a little to smooth things out, spray glue cellophane inside your mold, duct tape your two halves back together and pour 3 lbs foam in it. make sure you have a big hole to pour the foam in so it can rise out. this isn't a mold that will pressure up it needs to run out a little. Pop your two halves apart and pull the cast. I will be very rough and you'll need to work it but it will work. I've done several competition pieces this way. You might get a couple of pulls but it's going to most likely a one off.

 

What about the hair Jerry? And the frozen. Will the foam set on the frozen surface?

I’ve used depilatorys to de-hair mammals and make plaster casts, but never had good luck with the hair on.

 

You can basically do the same but use bondo

 

He asked about a carcass cast , that would be after you've skinned it.

aren't all manikins a "One use" thing ?

the hide is put on the manikin, the animal is mounted on the manikin and then given back to the customer as a completed mount. the manikin never gets used again.

i must be missing something.

 

The one off he is talking bout or means is the mold for the casting . He will only get one pour off of it , as it will be destroyed or damaged as he gets the form out of it .

You can get more than one pull from an foam mold if you are careful

 

I have done this with a 16 lb density foam
Then when pulled from carcass clean it up, sand smooth and fix needed areas
Wax wax and wax then wax again
Then I add my wire clam and pour 4 lb density
Relief hole is Necessary
You can get a couple pulls
Important note is wax the halves everywhere multiple times
