Carolina Fur Dressing Shutting Down

Ive been sending hides there since 1985 never tried another tannery. In all those years I never had a problem with any hides. I got to the point the only worry I had about my hides was UPS getting them there and back. Rick and Marsha Morgan ran the business the right way!!
Taxidermy is just a hobby to me now but sad to see them go!

 

Can't imagine the impact that's going to have on this industry.

 

Rick , I remember when you started. Good luck in your retirement and thank you for providing taxidermists with a great product all these years.

That’s called “tannery roulette “. It’s like playing the lottery, you almost never win.

 

I forgot , there was a posting on here 3 or 4 months ago that “”New Method will close there doors at the end of the year”. Due to all the same issues. The only difference was they are surrounded by tent camps and it was getting dangerous to go to work there for all the employees.
The key words in the Carolina letter were, “government over-site and regulations , that will only get worse “.

 

In an e-mail I got sometime in June from Jennifer, there was mentioned of a new tan for home tanners going to be offered from CFD. Said something like it would be something different that anyone else was offering. I was looking forward to trying that, but I guess that wont be offered?

 

Here's an option. Dry preservative!!

 

I found that even when you find a tannery that is working for you, it could be 3 or4 years into it and then you start getting crap because of a change on their part. I found that doing my own deer and small game helped, but I still had bears, elk and such that I just didn't have time or space to do. I did learn to fix some pretty bad issues from tanneries though.

I’d quit taxidermy before I’d ever do DP on a big game mount .

 

Had used New Method aka Pepi as far back as 1970. Sad to hear about them also. The last few years have used Quality Fur Dressing and have not had one problem at all. Have had African and north American stuff done all with exceptional quality and wet tans offered with a two-week turnaround. Dry tans were running six months which was pretty much average over the years with everyone.

 

That's not an option. That's desperation. Try DP on a bear, moose or bison.

 

With DP , it’s partner is bondo ears.

 

I dont get those in South Alabama. Anyway it's just an option that you yourself used for years.

 

This will put a bigger load on existing {surviving} tanneries and it will put them even farther behind.
