I'm glad I checked this out.

Don't any of you fellas know Pete Alaniz? I don't recall the name of his business but he's a personal friend and did a few pieces for me and it's good work. He's just a few miles south of Kerrville on #16 headin toward Bandera. He's been there for years. Used to work for Woodbury's. He knows his stuff. Does mostly wet tanning. That's what his customers want. He's Texas born and bred. Send me a personal and I'll be glad to give you his phone number.

Shhh!!don't make the little guys too public, they get swamped.pete is a great guy though.but I hear he's got one shop that's going to send him over 300 capes this fall,so I don't know how backed up he's gonna get.
He actually does a pretty good flat hide too, something most Kerrville guys don't do.

  4. How many tanners can one town have? Send some of them guys up here!

4 larger tanneries and about 5 or 6 of the garage guys.but we have at least 50 taxidermists.that one taxidermist for every 500 people.

I heard that Cody, Wy has 48 taxidermy shops, ten or so big shops and a bunch of guys doing it out of their homes, but with only 10,000 residents, that's one taxidermist for every 208 people

don't expect things to get any better if you use a bigger tannery.it's the same scenario that also happens to taxidermists :they grow and when they grow they hire more people who are less qualified and quality turnaround and organization go downhill.
IMO the solution would be for a tanner to look at what they can complete with the qualified help and make the money they need to make and go find two or three goodsized shops that pay immediately and pick up immediately and limit themselves to producing for those guys.
