George

The older I get, the better I was., Male, 77, from Magnolia, Delaware

There is a commercial product called "Snake Tan" out there . I'd set the skin in methanol or denatured alcohol (mixed 50:50 with water). May 15, 2020

If you're going to make single lamps, I'd suggest the caribou leg from Van Dykes.

That's Michael P. Schlabach who did that. I think Joe Kulis markets a tape of him doing that mount. I've never done one like that

Hey George, Have you ever finished the back of a pedestal mount like attached. I'm trying to figure out what product was used to get this look. I can't find out who originally made this mount.

George, I'm getting all my stuff ready to do my deer mount. In the meantime, my partially fleshed cape is in the freezer. You had suggested applying Stop Rot prior to applying the dry preservative. Can I use denatured alcohol instead? Just wondering because it's cheaper.

No, denatured alcohol is simply and astringent. Stop Rot was invented by a microbiologist who discovered a way to prevent individual cells from putrefying. It's more expensive but worth every penny. It's great on cuts and scrapes, sunburn and poison ivy. Fantastic stuff.

George, i have some squirrels that john Ellzey sent me through UPS and it took three days for me to get them.
When i did they were warm and not frozen any more well i checked them and one out of four was slipping and the other three was not.
So my question is when i take them out of the freezer should i spray rubbing alcohol on them before or after i let them thaw out i just to be sure ?

Personally, I'd use denatured alcohol instead. It has astringent qualities regular alcohol doesnt.
