What does the amount of post have to do with anything? There are people on here that have been in the taxidermy field for years but just got on the taxi net. People should be judged by the number of post they have but the knowledge they have.
Your 13 or 14 years old with going on 1000 post and you want to stop someone with 30 or 40 years as a taxidermist but only 100 post. I would like to see them drop the number of post you have. That would cut the BS by 50%.

 

BUT the ones that try it and fail, and there will be some, won't complain about the prices when they come to you. I've had that happen a lot with skulls, they try it themselvers and either decide it's too much work, too gross, or screw it up, then I look good

Thanks for taking the time, T... I'm no Taxidermist, but I'd boraxed and bondo'd a couple fans of my own some time back, and wanted a better method to make a tail to use on decoys. Didn't have to be pretty, but couldn't risk the boraxed in the rain, etc. This method works awesome, and I actually was able to put them back together pretty well, if I do say so myself. If I ever do another fan for myself, it will be this way-

Oh, and the tail slays Tom's, so as far as losing customers...with any luck the tail will be generating a full mount job for the guy that does my taxi work

 

Good article. This is how I have been doing my tails for over a decade now. Well worth the time and trouble IMO.

 

Meat free. Needs some cleaining attention but you already noted that. I personally think the feathers are spread a bit to far apart but great tutorial at the least.

 

I do all myturkey tails that way pheasants too

 

I'm glad I found this website . It has some great info. I use to do the fan mount by cleaning and bondo ,man did that suck. MR. T tutorial is awesome . I did 4 fan mounts and it was a piece of cake. Thanks

I did one of my turkeys like that and it came out awesome it was my first time doing one and i wont do it any other way. Its really not that hard to do just have to pay attention and take your time and if you have the time it will come out great.

 

Can anyone tell me exactly what to do with the secondary feathers and the back feathers? Are these seperated and cleaned the same way the primary feathers are, or do you do something different? Also, how do you make the base of the fan where you glue everything together as thin as possible?

 

I have a fan i did earlier in the season using borax salt to dry. I know there is plenty of meat left on the fan that has dried due to the salt. Would it be possible to some how un-dry the fan and re-do following the method above?

 

took your advice and followed the method above...fan turned out great and only took less than an hour! Trying to do a fan and wing mount, so when I get done will try to post a pic. THanks for a great, easy method.
