Holy crap! This PH/Guide either has balls of steel, or knows this particular Elephant! Probably the latter! ;)

That looks like Ivan Carter. He is know as the elephant expert and reads the body language very well. They are still wild animals and I have seen him get in sticky situations lately on the program he co hosts with Boddington. He has had to shoot elephants at his feet twice in the last few shows and he states they are the first in many years. One died maybe 2 feet in front of him. He definitely waited to the last second. He is a tremendous PH.

  4. Well i had a run in with an elephant @ the Oregon Wildlife Safari..we were posing for photos and she curled her trunk around my belly ad squeezed kinda hard...man i got a little nervous, but didn't freak out... thought she meant to lift me up or something but she was just saying "I like you"...

one of the more cooler moments in my life :)

    Cool pic, thanks for posting.

Now, for a stupid question. What does "PH" mean? Professional hunter?

Yes Becky, around the world they are known as "Professional Hunters" not guides. Most I have talked with don't like the word guide, like they are on a tour or something.

Thanks Kevin. "Guide" does sound kinda touristy.

Maybe so, but when they are taking tourists on a "Photo Safari", they are guiding the customers to see the animals they have paid to "see", and not "hunting" for them ... They track the animals, and guide the tourists up to the creatures. In that respect, that sounds like a guide to me. If they didn't like the term, then they should just Hunt with Hunters ... but, reality being what it is ... that have to guide tourists on Photo Safaris. Otherwise, they'd be hard-pressed to make a living at what they love to do.

Then too, you have people that go on Photo Safaris that don't want to hear they are being guided by a PH -- "Professional Hunter" (God forbid!) ... so they bow to what they must to keep themselves employed. It's a double edged sword, no doubt about it!

Hell, many PH have given their lives protecting their clients, gun shooters or camera shooters! That's why they are always armed ... their not stupid! They are a very brave lot indeed!!

If you like to see more of Ivan Carter his website is very cool.He does both photo and hunting safaris.

    http://www.ivancarter.com/photographic-safaris/photo_gallery.htm

That double rifle twirl, has become somewhat of a signature move of his,to shout down a mock charge.

    Hey WoodmanDan,

Thanks a ton for the link. Very cool guy! Listed as a guide ... in fact was awarded the "Best Guide" trophy based on his exam performance at the end of 1991, and is one of the few people to hold Professional Guide's, Professional Hunter's and Canoe Guide's licences! This and a "plethora" (thanks El Guapo from Three Amigos) of other awards. and very cool under pressure it seems!

    Thanks again for the link!

    John.

  13. He is an Pachyderm whisperer. I would like to see him work that one in the round pen. My bet is Pat Parrellis crap would not work on the beast.

You would enjoy talking to him.He is very approachable and unassuming in demenor.

My biggest fear is he stays out of harms way,for I am trying to line up a hunt with him in 2010(elephant).LOL I just need a little better economy to help my hunt fund along.

Here is another interesting link; The big 5 taken in 28 days for one hunter.

The hunter won a state lottery for many millions $$$ a couple years ago,and bid on a filmed hunt with Craig Boddington at SCI/Reno.And has returned several times since, including this trip.
