Replacing a WT Ear

Discussion in 'Beginners' started by muddobber, Dec 3, 2009.

  1. I have a WT right now that has a really bad ear. Can I take a ear off of another cape and sew it on in place of the bad ear??? Is it worth doing this or just try to work with the bad one? The bad ear has a big split in it and the guy road the deer around all day showing him off in the back of his truck and it was warm. The ear wouldn't turn all the way out to the end and the hair started to slip in small spots on the back of the ear.

I have done it before on an ear like that. It is hard to find an ear to match the original in color and hair length.

I'm thinkin repair the ear. Or get a replacement cape. I would not attempt to replace the ear. But that is just me. I think it would be tough to find a perfect match.

I would get another cape today, I only sewed the ear on because of the size of the cape was a monster, not easy to replace one that size. If you are using liners, you could mount the ear, and glue a patch of another ear on the back side.

Unless you are very good with a needle and dont mind it takeing a while to do you can do it. But the question I would have is if the one ear is slipping hair already, the rest of the cape probably isnt in much better condition either. If you continue use Stop Rot and Stop Slip as fast as possible to help curb the sliping. And just from one experience I have had it that dont work add a little alum to your pickle. Not sure how you intend on taning it or what process your using but thats just a safe way of doing it.

I would get a new cape though. just my 2cents

  7. I have done that a few times. It worked out fine. I have access to a butcher shop where I buy extra capes. I just went there with the cape and looked over the deer laying there until I found one that matched up. Even an adult doe ear will work. I look for buck capes where the throat is slit and aren't good for anything else. Every year, I will cut off several pairs of earsand throw them in the freezer just in case I need them.

When you sew it on, the seam in the front will be hidden by the wrinkles in the ear butt.

  8. I think Bill Yox posted a thread a while back showing how he replaced a slipped ear. I'll try and find it.

I would replace the cape. But if you must I would probably say plan to replace both ears with the closest match you can find from that cape. They tend to vary from each deer. Good luck.

What? Both? are you nuts? Just turn the head so the off ear is to the back side.
