Syn tan reacting with metal. Makes nice shades of purple, lavender, etc. Turns tan when drying.

Recently tanned a elk full body hide...using paratan...was stirring it occasionally w/a metal broom handle. Perhaps that why I noticed some minute purple spots on the skin. Super small spots about the size of salt grains. I'll get back to using a 2x4.........thanks......gary

You didn't have some iodized salt around it did you the iodine will cause purple in contact with starch.

    Just a thought

I think I did have some iodized salt around. Maybe that's what caused it?

Up here in Wisconsin I see that spotting from Tick bites Alot. You got ticks down there?

Yes, there are tons of ticks down here. I'd take a pic but I sold the hide. gary

  9. Purple spots could also appear where you didn't get the hide thin enough. Might have left some extra meat in these spots.

I can rule that one out as the hide was very thin.

Jeff, there's not enough iodine in iodized salt to make a grape blush. Old wives tale. Perhaps if you're doing a snowshoe hare you MIGHT get a bit of brown tinge to the hair but still unlikely.

I guess I'm too old school. I needed a damned interpreter to understand the question to begin with. How can anyone WRITE like that and expect others to READ it?

  14. i know sometimes on a whitetail cape they will have a spot or two that looks like a bruise from where a really bloody piece of meat was on it before it was frozen and when it was thawing before it was rough fleshed. and even after thinning and tanning they sometimes still show.
