I mounted a deer about 3 days ago. I tanned using krowtann and just realized I didnt neutralize after tanning with Krowtann. I did wash the hide about 3 or 4 times with tide after I took it out of the krowtann. I have been noticing that when I was grooming it that I was loosing some hair and I was trying to figure out why. Not a ton of hair but more than I would usually see on my slicker brush. I just backbrushed the entire deer and sprayed it with a water / baking soda mix. Am I screwed? Does anyone have any suggestions, besides read the directions next time.

After about 15-20 minutes i have now taken a spay nozzle and rinsed the baking soda/water off. Should I remove the hide and dip the whole think in a neutral bath?

my question is how the hell did you get any stretch? If you washed it 3-4 times in tide you will probably be ok the Tide will neautralize somewhat. I would let it dry and move on. If it's stored in a humid enviroment it could develop acid rot down the road I guess, but unlikely.

i just did a pull test and most of the hair is tight. There is a spot on the lower neck on the side that I grabbed about a 1/4 inch clump and most of it came out. Any Suggestions? Please.

When it dries will the hair "lock in"? This was about my 5th deer second using krowtann and I had as good of stretch as I did with the last one I krowtanned.

  6. Put a fan on it, let it dry. Should be ok.

LOL! that was my first question Harley! "How did you get any stretch!"

  9. I think you should pull hair in a lot of places, pull really hard to make sure its going to stay. Not.

My bet is thepH was so low the tan did not take, so basiclly its slightly tanned.

    Enough tide and its ok.

Your hair slip is not a result of not neutralizing.....

I put it is a wash basin with about 3/4 -1 cup of tide. The water is usually pretty blue. I usually let it sit for a few minutes then agitate it. Rinse 2 or 3 times or until I get no suds and then do it all over again. I take it that is overkill on the washing and will cut back a little. I am glad I did it this time though. Thank you to all who replied. I will wait and hope it survives.

just a quick wash to get all the salt out and any residule dirt is all that is needed then rinse in cear water 2-3 times or untill no more soap. You don't want to wash the oil out of the skin left there by the KT.

Your OCD on the washing probably is what is going to save you this time. That thing had to be like mounting a cold asphalt shingle without being neutralized. It is a wonder it fit the form and it is a wonder your skin didn't fall off your fingers from handling it.

kennygribbins god , family first !!

you're not the first person to do that it should be ok just don't pull it . If you ever have problems with Ktan give them a call they'll be glad to help.

they are glad to, but they don't always give straight answers especially if it could cause something to go wrong. I called a couple weeks ago had an iffy cape come in so instead of salting and sending out I wanted to get it in KT right away. I only had 6 oz of KT left and asked them if a batch that size would be enough for a 20+ deer cape.

The reply I got was "Everything about that is borderline, it could go either way" LOL NO CHIT? Why do you think I called and asked your opinion.

On the other hand though I totally get it Brian isn't going to say something outside the norm should be ok and then if if fails have a customer calling and beeching about how he said it would be fine so please don't take my comment as me slamming him. Because he is a great guy and will help you out when he can he's just not going to put his but on the line to do it and who could blame him.

BTW Brian, If you are reading this..........IT TURNED OUT FINE ;) LOL
