Maceration before simmering

    If I macerate a deer skull for a few weeks before simmering am I gaining anything? (ease of cleaning) main thing is I don't have time to do skull right now and don't have freezer space so I'm gonna soak for a few weeks and then simmer. Will this cause any damage?

    If you can keep the water at 90 degrees, the soft tissue will be gone in about 7 days. No need to simmer, just degrease and whiten.

    If you macerate properly, there is no need to simmer. The skull is clean and you move to the next step.

    you can store it in water(like you said no freezer)It doesn't help the process of simmering any.cover the container for it will start to smell.if not in a rush to get it done then leave it in there til done.

    Thanks guys. If I do macerate how long should it take? Do I just rinse it off every couple weeks and the meat will literally fall off? Sorry first time maserator lol

    Search on Macerate or maceration. You can read for a week.

    I macerated mine for approx. 2 weeks before the smell became unbearable to my wife. Also, since I did not have insulation around the bucket i was using, the cold outside kept maceration to a minimum. So I pulled it out and simmered the remaining flesh off. Actuallly turned out to be my best skull yet

    I'm in Texas too Polson, I don't insulate mine, I just drop in an aquarium heater and it takes me about 3 weeks.
