Hey Terry is this a TRASHFISH!

    1st time I have ever seen or caught a fish like this. Didn't know what the hell it was but heard the locals call it a dogfish, grenal (MSP) or a bowfin. It's a prehistoric looking critter. They are fast and fight pretty good. Oh and yes they BITE! Got my finger and I knew it. Their teeth are pretty freaking sharp. It's hard to get them to open their mouth and release what they have a hold of!

    What the hell is Olney?

    Never fished a river before in my life. Only fish local private ponds around the house. The only fish I know anything about are Channel Cat, Bluegill, LRG Mouth Bass, crappie, buffalo and carp, To be honest, if I know anything about those it's very little. LOL

    Scott,
    That is a "Trashed Fish". Dan did you notice the purple tongue while you were trying to pry your finger out of its mouth. Next time don't try to lip it like a bass.

    It is a Bowfin, we call them Choupique (shoe-pick). Down here it is trash to some, delicious to others. I dont personally fool with them.

    We call then "grinnel" here and they are considered "bottom of the barrel" as far as fish go! Fun to catch though. They fight like the devil and will eat anything!

    LOL I didn't try to lip him I just tried to get the hook out and when it gave my fingers went forward and he closed down again! Unfortunately I didn't notice the tongue but that gives me a reason to go back! ;)

    Why don't you see fish like that at the comps?

    we call em dogfish in minnesota. its too bad rough fish dont get more credit. while they may not taste like walleye or perch they fight 100 times harder and can be just as tough to catch at times. carp, bowfin, drum, suckers and any others you'd like to add to the list are everybit a sportfish as walleye and bass. they are also some of the prettiest fish swimming.

    Olney is a small town south east of Effingham that us "northerners" go to catch Crappie. I think the water is called East Fork Lake or Reservoir? They catch what you have there all the time but they call them dogfish.

    I thought it was a pretty cool fish and WHEN I go back IF I catch one that aint so beat up I think I will keep it and make a replica of it. I think it is cool as hell. 8)

    I agree with Mikek, ive fished for ciscoes, rocky mountain whitefish, and regular whitefish... all of them r fun to catch, and in some places they r starting to be targetted species, like in green bay for instance whitefish have become a really popular fish to catch thru the ice...

    I would have but hell I didn't know what name to put it under. LOL Feel free to copy them directly to your computer if you want to save them as well. If you sell any, make sure I get some props or royalty. LOL ;D

    It's just scales right Jimmy! LOL I think it is bad ass.
