Artistic School of Taxidermy Recent Student Pictures 4/16/2011 Just finished up five great days with Bob. Bob did a lifesize bobcat, a bobcat rug (less the felt) and a blacktail shoulder mount. I couldn't have asked for better company. You were a pleasure to teach Bob! Hurry up and get that bear...big and black ;)

Hi troy, I'm looking for someone to show me the ins and outs about fish taxidermy. i just bought a couple of DVDs to see how it was done but i was very disappointed with the DVDs. I have 13yrs as a autobody painter and looking to transfer my skills to the taxidermy trade. the question i have for you is what kind of class schedules do you have and what do you charge.
    thanks,jason

Troy Rose Learning...one of life's greatest treasures!

At 64 years old and semi-retired I was finally able to pursue my dream of doing taxidermy. I recently returned from Troy Rose's Artistic School of Taxidermy where I spent six days of training. Upon arriving at his school in Kooskia, Idaho I was amazed at the beauty of the surroundings and the wonderful accommodations. While I was there I viewed deer, elk and turkeys on the hillsides and in the yard.

I mounted a full-size bobcat, bobcat rug and a shoulder mount black tail deer that turned out beautiful. Troy’s combination of knowledge and one-on-one teaching ability is second to none. He truly is a master of the trade. I was able to work long hours in the shop in order to finish my work. His help and advice were always there whenever I needed it.

Thanks again for all the effort you gave to make sure l left there with first class knowledge and beautiful mounts. I cannot wait to return to further advance my skills with different animals. I recommend anybody wanting to learn taxidermy or advance their skills and enjoy first class accommodations that you will truly enjoy your time spent there at the school.

Troy, thanks for a great time!

Well, it's finally happening!!! I'm finally learning how to do taxidermy!!! I'm Lacie and yes, I'm a girl, and I am learning to do taxidermy. I am learning form Master Taxidermist Troy Rose of Artistic School of Taxidermy. So far I have skinned and cleaned a pheasant, a wood duck, and a quail. I've prepped my antelope cape and muledeer cape. I learned how to fix a badly broken skull plate and set antlers on a form. We mock set up my lifesize coyote jumping after a pheasant, and today I hope to finish my wood duck. I will have pictures of all my mounts when I complete the course. Wish me luck :)

Well, I suppose if you like being stuck on a mountain top 20 miles from nowhere, in a beautiful five star home with your own deluxe suite, learning the art of taxidermy from a master... then, you might look into Mr. Rose's schooling.

I must warn you though, the accommodations are perilous!

The first thing you will notice upon arrival is the complete isolation from civilization, and an over abundance of wildlife.

One wrong move out here and you're lunch... You wouldn't want to end up turkey food, would you? Just look at this monstrous tom- tried to eat me for breakfast one morning while I was out taking photos!

I even managed to get a few shots of the vultures as they awaited my impending doom!

Luckily, I had back-up! And now Troy has a monster turkey to mount! ;D
    [IMG]

And better yet, I got to eat turkey all week! Not to mention fresh-picked morel mushrooms, simmered up savoury-like in a sweet buttery marinade. (watch out, this food might just kill you)

But aside from the perils of being swept away by rogue vultures, devoured by ravenous turkeys, and trampled by audacious deer, the real thing you have to watch out for is Mr. Rose's schooling! Woe betide he who leaves a mess in Troy's shop! Fail to clean up after yourself, and you may just find yourself strung out for bear bait the next morning! And besides, is it REALLY worth results like this?

I dunno, folks. I gotta wonder sometimes about these taxidermy schools... You never know WHAT your'e gonna get!

...Well, of course I'm full bologna. Although, having a certain love for the "great outdoors" and its wildlife does make your stay all the more magical. I loved the photo opportunities, and got a few golden shots to add to reference albums. Fighting turkeys, eating turkeys, strutting turkeys, running turkeys, plus various other bird species and lots of deer.

Honestly, it was a grand experience. I completely re-learned most of my taxidermy skills. I am far more confident now, especially with my birds. My attendance was focused on rounding off some of my rough edges, and learning a few skills and tricks I was apprehensive to try myself. I feel it was worth every penny- I've been to taxidermy school before, but had I gone to Troy first I'd probably be a lot further than I am now!

On top of the invaluable learning experience, I could only expect that everyone's stay might be as eventful as mine. Witnessing the turkey "hunt" (more like ambush from the back door) was a fun addition to my stay. He was a big, beautiful bird... and he tasted great too. On that note, as it has been said, Troy will spoil you with home-cooked meals three times a day. And I gotta admit- my prior schooling was put to shame by Troy's five-star accommodations. I expect I will go back again someday, when I open a new chapter in my taxidermy career and need a little more "rounding out".

Thanks for the opportunity and experience, Troy. I wish you luck in building a prestigious reputation for your school- it won't be too hard!

(Yeah, it was a little long, but I suppose a double dose of good publicity is payment enough for having taken a month to get my review up :))

Troy Rose Learning...one of life's greatest treasures!

Artistic School of Taxidermy Recent Student Pictures 05/29/2011 Just finished up 3 very long days with Thomas and Nadia :-* from Gateway, Colorado. This was Thomas's third return and Nadia's second. Nadia did a very large black bear rug (not pictured) and Thomas did two sweet muleys and learned advanced mounting techniques. They brought back ALL their pieces from previous teachings to learn finish work. Nadia did her Dall Sheep last time she was here and Thomas did an elk and mule deer. The first time I had Thomas as a student he did two mule deer...his talents have improved greatly! If you cant tell, Thomas has a passion for HUGE mule deer . The Coues deer and his Bull Elk were studs as well!!!

Her coyote and pheasant combination came out AWESOME!!! (coyote was lacking putty and paint around the eyes, and the base work was not quite finished at time of photo)...way to hang in there Girl :p, you did a GREAT JOB!!!

I just finished 5 Great days with Troy and I have to say this was the BEST workshop I could have done. Troys skills and attention to detail are amazing. He is truly a wonderful teacher, he takes the time to make sure you completely understand each step. I must have asked a million questions and he never lost patience and made the long days in the shop fun. I went there to further my skills and left with a whole new understanding of taxidermy. As far as the accommodations, I have been on many vacations that did not compare. My suite was modern and clean, Troys house/shop are absolutely beautiful with great views and so much wildlife. Turkeys and deer come to feed a few times a day and are only a few feet from the shop door. We saw elk, deer, bear and turkeys all from his yard. Troys cooking skills are second only to his taxidermy skills, he seemed to throw together meals in minutes yet were always Delicious and more than I could eat. He opens his house to you as if you were an old friend and I feel I not only got a great education but made a true friend as well. If you are looking to learn or want to advance your skills go see Troy you will not be disappointed!!

    Thanks again Troy,

    Mark

It doesn't get any better than this folks! I went to train with Troy for the second time and I have no doubt I will be back again. The peaceful serine setting of his studio atop lush green Idaho mountains gives breathtaking views and abundant wildlife viewing. Surrounded by this was awesome but the true bounty is the experience and knowledge gained in hands on taxidermy skills. From start to finish I've learned the ins and outs of creating the perfect mount. I've learned what to do and what not to do. Troys expertise allows for abundant growth in taxidermy skills if you are looking to learn from the beginning or improve your existing skills.

    What an AWESOME experience!!!

    TAXIDERMY ROCKS!!!

Well, as you can all see, I had a great time learning taxidermy at Artistic School of Taxidermy. I spent 10 awesome days with Troy learning taxidermy. I think the favorite piece I did was my deer. I must say, Troy has a great deal of patience, as he never gave up on me and was always there encouraging me to keep going. Okay, so I might have wanted to give up on the coyote piece like 100 times, but I stuck it out and got it finished. It turned out way cool and everybody at home thinks it's the bomb!!! My wood duck was pretty handsome as well. I'm glad I made the choice to go see Troy. He's a great teacher and his place is gorgeous!!! Thanks for making my dream come true!!! Hope to see you again soon!!!

I spent 5 days learning birds with Troy and it was an absolute blast. I started as an absolute beginner and now have the confidence and knowledge of how to put a bird together properly and the tricks to make it look good. I struggled at the start but Troy stuck through with me and let me learn things the hard way at times so that I understood what I was doing. He supervised me along the way and made sure that I was staying on track and showing me the way things were supposed to be done. His place is 5 stars for sure, from the location to the food to the shop, its breathtaking. From being able to work throughout the day while turkeys, deer and quail were just yards away out the window, to the delicious meals that are prepared for each meal. His house has breathtaking views outside and is a palace inside. Troy showed great patience and a true passion of taxidermy, he shows what it takes to be great and inspires you to do the same. He works hard so that you succeed and makes you feel right at home. I hope that others can experience what I have as just staying at his house was an experience that I will never forget, and now I have the skills and knowledge that I can feel confident in putting out quality work of my own. Thanks again Troy for teaching me and showing me what taxidermy is really about.
