A goog sharp draw knife is the trick. Once you get through the fleshing part they are pretty simple to mount up. They are my favorite critter to mount.

But sending it to hogheaven would be the easiest and Ive seen some nice hogs they have done.

 

Cut some lines in the shield and get a pressure washer out. I have a pressure washer that rips those shields off! You just have to make a few cuts to get it started!

 

It works best for me when I remove the shield from the skin.... vs the skin from the shield. Ya, I know, sounds weird, but it works for me. Oh ya, I use a scalpel and plenty of them.
Just keep telling your self...... no sewing, NO sewing!!!.............. when it comes to mounting the thing.

 

I like to cut a checker pattern in the sheild with a knife and then hit it with my nekker draw knife.

It seems to come off easier when your just taking a few small squares off at a time.

 

I have a Bettcher, which I rarely use anymore. A kid down the road will skin out the head and flesh the cape for $75!!!

The first one I mounted was a really big boar my neighbor had shot. He had taken me on a hunt for free so I cut him a deal on the mount. Fleshing that thing put a whooping on me and I was sore for a week. It turned out great and my neighbor loved it, but before I let him walk out with it, I made it ever so clear that my normal price for hogs just went up $100 and he nor anyone else would ever get any price breaks on a hog no matter what.

 

I just started skinning my first one today. I set it out of the freezer last night and the thing still isn't fully thawed. I got the snout skinned and alot of the shield cut but its too hard on one side and can't get the skin to move to finish it up. When I started I was excited to do it but now I'm tired and going to start back in the morning. It is still cold does anyone think I might have trouble with hair slip?

 

At a hog mounting seminar, the instructor said he used an electric fillet knife to remove the shield and threw it away when he was done.

 

Hogs are pretty tough and dont slip easy but you shouldnt leave it long if the weather is warm and you dont have a fridge to store it in.

 

Thanks. We are having some cool weather this week and I think that's why it's taking so long to thaw. I'm going to finish in the morning and get it salted asap.

 

Be nice if it was as easy as Rick Carter made it look.
