I had a customer bring in a black bear that had a rear foot missing. All was healed and there was a
stub with tough skin on it . As I skinned the stub I ran into pieces of bullet fragments . It is beyond my comprehension that a foot could be blown clean off and heal without the animal expiring from infection or blood loss. This looked to be healed for a long time. What amazing things have you seen like this?

  2. we once shot a bear that had a broadhead still in it's should blade, all healed.

Skinned a bear head last year that had 7 buck shot pellets in it's head

A local doe was hit by a car last year and walked around town with a terrible limp. I didn't see her all winter long, so I thought she'd expired off in the woods somewhere. I saw her the other day, still walking with a limp, with two fawns behind her. Seems to be doing well after all!

I've also seen bald eagles with one foot, and numerous raccoons with no tails (I've wondered how this happens so often around here; I've seen four or five raccoons without tails this year alone).

But the most amazing incident I've heard of was from my birth-uncle's elk hunt last year: He shot a huge bull with an entire bear canine tooth stuck in the elk's skull just over the eye socket.

and yet you will stub your toe and be on the ground in pain....people don't realize that animals process pain just the way we do...they are just tougher.....as our caveman ancestors were.....we've turned into a bunce of candy asses

  6. Skinned a hog with a broadhead and two inches of arrow shaft healed over in the shoulder. Also, alligators are missing feet and and pieces of tail all of the time.

A week ago I found a possum that had been hit by a car on our street. Thought it was dead, since it was just laying there. I went over to pick it up, and he looked up at me and hissed! He got up and staggered a few feet away and then laid down again. I couldn't let him suffer so I took him home in a box and dispatched him in the backyard with a catch pole. Only when I skinned him I realized the extent of his injuries and couldn't believe he had survived at all--His skull was literally split down the middle, exposing the brain!

He probably would have died from it on his own eventually, but its amazing that the trauma alone didn't just kill him right away. Animals really are tough, and cling to life stronger than we often realize.

  8. We had a deer came in whose face was full of bird shot, and one foot was also full of bird shot, and was really messed up, but both were healed over. Another foot had some kind of growth defect, hoof just wasn't right.
