I killed a caribou this past fall and froze the hide. I would like to flesh it myself and prepare it the best I can to try and keep the cost of tanning it down. Just looking for some suggestions on fleshing knives or other tools to help me get it ready.

    Thanks.

Get yourself a scalpel that's all you need, make sure you get everything turned including the ears. Make sure you get directions, trying to save 25 or 50 bucks is neat but if you ruin it it's a lot more expensive to go back to shoot another

  3. A fleshing knife will help on removing meat and fat from the hide.

Thanks guys. Not just trying to save some money, but trying to learn how to handle and prepare hides. Just have to ask: Wouldn't fleshing a whole caribou hide with a scalpel be a bit tedious?

NOPE you have great control and a good blade! I also like to use a small fillet knife as well for bigger areas. Alot of the times I use your cheap basic razor blades that I buy in packs of a 100. Lets say $.60 a scalpel or $.05 for a razor blade.

So no fleshing tool at all? Just razor blades and a fillet knife? I like that idea and am going to give it a try. Do you work it over a beam or stretch it out on plywood or just work it laying on a bench?
