I use non-iodized salt for my hides that I purchase from a Food service center for about $8 for a 50lb bag. I recently discovered that my local feed store carries something called Solar salt in an 80lb bag for around $8. Is "Solar Salt" the same thing, or can it be used on hides? Thanks in advance for the response!

WOW!!! I just read a topic on salt and saw where ole George just about had the big one because someone failed to look up the answer in the search field (like me)... Well, after reading Mr. T's Wikopedia answer, I guess I can go ahead and buy the cheap Solar salt...George, I hope I didn't ruin your evening! LOL! Back to skinning I go...

I get mine from farm fleet/fleet farm. I'm not sure how fine that "solar salt" is you get but the "fine mixing salt" at fleet is about like table salt. Its 4.60 a 50lb bag normally but ive gotten it on sale for 3.25 before. The brand is american stockman. I pliek the really fine stuff over that coarser salt because is covers much better.

Best price I can find is $13 for 40lbs at a feed store.....

  9. I don't use this myself but if you have a home depot it is cheaper than what you've been getting.

Thanks, may give it a try...in all my research, all I can come up with is "salt is salt"...nothing fancy about it...just different methods of obtaining it...As long as it's finely ground, it will work...Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
