Fleshing a cape by hand in record time...

    One of the most interesting seminars at the Mississippi State Taxidermy Convention this year was Charles, a taxidermist from Jackson, MS. Charles uses a Victorinox butcher knife and an oak beam to flesh capes. It is truly amazing to see what this man does with a knife and scalpel in just a few minutes. In less than 30 minutes, he takes a raw, washed and tumbled cape, and has it ready to mount. Eyes are opened all the way, nostrils and lips are super clean, and the ears are turned all the way out He is fleshing and shaving with the same stroke. His knife is viciously sharp, and he makes every stroke count. Here are a few photos

    Every minute of so, he dips the knife in water, then strokes it a few times on a ceramic rod. People are always timing his work. His record is 21 minutes and 52 seconds! Now there's a record for someone to break without cutting off a few fingers! This was the most amazing fleshing work I have ever witnessed!

    Has anybody ever taken a video of his technique? Sounds like a mega time-saver!

    He is very fast. I flipped out when he started. His knife cut threw the meat like butter. Extremely sharp knife!!!!!

    That guy should be the richest taxidermist ever if he can mount as fast as he shaves. I would love to witness that.

    He told us that he once had an 800 lb hog cape ready to shoulder mount in 3 hours. There is a rule that when he is around, if a knife leaves his hand by slipping out or being dropped, let it hit the floor. He said one hit the floor once, bounced up and cut a perfect circle the size of a matchhead on his face.

    Mr Joey Ive had the pleasure to work with him in Dan Heasleys shop for around 6 months and he is amazing at what he does! Very rarely will he even cut the slightest hole and on top of that , one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Congrats Charles aka"DOC" on Ur seminar.

    Well...I bow my head in shame. Heck...it takes me 4 hours even using a machine. Does he want a job??

    Probably not, but you could ask him if he needs someone to sweep up his scraps. You might qualify.

    Charles is simply amazing at what he does.......he has been doing it for 25 years and can flesh anything that doesnt start with an ( S ) he says he dont do them....lol......he also does outreach ministry work through his church when not working... he is a Great Man!!!

    ANyway, ::) he could make a hundred dollars an hour at my shop. I'm only 4 hours from Jackson!!

    Heck I'm glad I got to met him while I was at your shop Dan. At the time I didn't know Doc was gonna be famous.. He is a nice man. Glad that I got the chance to met him.
