I was looking at some references for common eiders and I noticed something and had to ask a second opinion; why are some drakes's bills blueish-grey and others are bright yellow?

Is it a sub species of Common Eider? Or something else?

    Thanks.

Get hold of of Frank Todd's book "Handbook of Waterfowl Identification." He has pictures of the various species of Eiders. Be aware the pictures are only as good as the artist who painted them. Delacours' books on Waterfowl of the World would be a good reference-again artists' renditions at the best. Good Luck!

Pbase.com - search "Eider" or "common Eider" at the top, there should be tons of good reference pictures

Rick RR GBirds Let's go kill some birds...I'm psyched!

Everything varies in the world of waterfowl and birds.

smalliestalker and a river runs through it.

"The Pacific form of the Common Eider is distinct genetically and morphologically from the other forms, and may be a different species. The male has a thin black V on its chin and a bright yellow or orange bill."

Thank you all so much for the links and advice. I knew there was a lot about waterfowl but looks like I have plenty left to read up and learn. I appreciate it greatly!
