Peroxide Dilution ratios

Did a quick search but my specifics weren't quite addressed. H2O2 cost and availability leaves me with 35 and 50% locally. Ill admit Im none too comfortable using 50% and storing it in the garage but if I am able to dilute it to 35%, ill wind up with a similar quantity at a lesser price than if purchasing 35%.

    Options are 5gal 50 @$125 or 15gal 35 @$240.

So, dilution of 50% to 35% would require a ratio of what?

BTW I'm well aware of the hazards of working with peroxide, I'm well aware of the precautions etc. I have a fully enclosed 75 gallon fish tote that everything is stored and whitened in!

  2. Actually, 15 gallons of 35% at $240 is cheaper than buying 5 gallons of 50% at $125 and diluting it down to 35%. Anyone out there want to check my math?

    Found this online:

Since you have a 50% mixture of hydrogen peroxide, that is the highest you can go (without adding more hydrogen peroxide)... so given your 100ml... you have 50ml of hydrogen peroxide and 50ml of water... so the equation you have is...

50ml (hydrogen peroxide)/(100ml + added water) = percentage of hydrogen peroxide

    Water to add (ml) = (50/Required percentage) - 100

    So 30% you add... 66.6ml = (50/0.3)-100
    For 22% you add... 127.3ml = (50/0.25) -100
    for 3% you add... 1566ml = (50/0.03) - 100

They were out of 15gal so the 50% was my only option. Another company will sell 35% by the gallon but they want $40/gal.

I did see the above equations.

The way I figure it it's $8.3 per gal with 50% and diluting, but $16/gal to buy 35% (prices are roughly calculated)

    35% is $16/gal.
    50% is $25/gal.

So diluting 50% would net me roughly 7.5 gallons.
    So a net of $16/gal.

BTW I'm well aware of the hazards of working with peroxide, I'm well aware of the precautions etc. I have a fully enclosed 75 gallon fish tote that everything is stored and whitened in.

  7. Okay, I'll show a little math (if you have arithmophobia close your eyes).

First question: How many gallons of 50% do you need to make 1 gallon of 35%?

Here's an equation to start with:

You are solving for the volume needed.
The volume you want to end up with is 1 gal.
The % you have is 50.
The % you want is 35.

    So x/35 = 1/50.

    Or x = 35 x 1/50.

Therefore, x = 0.7 gallons of 50% to make one gallon of 35%.

    ------------------

Which is cheaper, 15 gallons of 35% at $240 or 5 gallons of 50% at $125?

5 gallons of 50% for $125 is $25 per gallon.

    $25 per gallon x 0.7 gallons of 50% = $17.50 per gallon of 35%.

15 gallons of 35% at $240 is $16.00 per gallon.

So if you can buy the 35% in the 15 gallon drum it is cheaper by $1.50 per gallon.

    -----------------

$40 for a gallon of 35% is way too expensive.

lol I can understand and keep up, but Algebra was 15 years ago. I was pretty close, I figured 90oz of 50% and 38oz of distilled water to make 35%. Net just under 7.5 gallons. Close enough to not sweat it. It'll pay for itself by Friday.

I know that you are talking about the 35% and higher .. but ... is is so much better than 27%? 15 gallons of that would cost me $180 max and usually less.

I don't live in the continental US, so it's more a matter of who can get what and at a reasonable price.

Yeah. Point there. Might not be a lot of call for swimming pools there. Spas and hot tubs though. Those guys are the ones with the 27%. Some folks up there have them. Seen pictures of the moose and bears sitting in them. :)

The pool/spa water specialists were the most expensive at $40/gal of 35%.

Ouch. Shipping costs most likely. Here they have the 27% at $11 to $12 a gallon usually. Might be moving to AK at some point. Have to keep that expense in mind.

As busy as I am, the overhead is very acceptable.
