If breakage is a concern you can also use two layers of plexiglass with reflective house window tint on the bottom layer. If you prefer a darker reflection add a layer of car window tint to give the illusion of greater depth. You can also mold/shape the top layer of plexi to create ripples if you wish.

Huh, I've never been able to find mirrored plexi in big sheets. Sure would make it easier.

 

Rebecca's idea works best. I like to use TWO pieces of glass. I use quarter inch plate as a top piece and suspend a plate mirror about an inch underneath. It creates the reflection as well as depth.

Realistically, for most applications, it would seem that Mylar would work just as well. With Mylar, you could buy a roll and just apply it to whatever base surface you wanted.

 

I knew if I searched long enough I would find an answer. I have spent the last 2 nights reading on the net and searching for answers that lead to more questions. In reading I keep finding articles saying that a glass mirror reflects light 4 times making your subject appear a little distorted. Plexiglass mirror, on the other hand, only reflects light 2 times thus giving you a more clear reflection. I'm still searching for answers and need to experiment but to me the window tint would be the easiest way to achieve the reflection.

 

The mirrors they have in fast food restaurants are plastic and come in layers. When an idiot comes in and scratches graffiti on it they just peel that one off.

 

I put a mirror under a rippled water surface once and after evrything was glued sealed and all that the water looked silver. So silver that it killed the beauty of the water surface to me. I ended up ripping evrything apart and removing the mirror. If your water surface has any kind of ripple whatsoever you dont get the kind of reflection your imagining. IMO doing a double acrylic layered gives you a much nicer look than ending up with mystical chrome water.
