It seems that sometimes my eyes turn out great and sometimes they drive me crazy! anyone else have this problem? I'm working on an elk mount right now and it's driving me crazy!! I can't seem to get the left eye to look right!! ugh! I finally had to just mist it a little and walk away. Sometimes I wonder if it's just me or if the eye really doesn't look right. Oh well! just needed a breather and wonder how many other people have these same days?

Just bag it and walk away for an hour or so. It tends to help me.

Yeah that's what I did. I love it when the wife says, "here let me help!". Bless her heart! she tries! :) But then I end up ripping all the critter clay out of both eyes and starting over! Don't tell her I said that!! LOL!

Try turning the entire mount upside down.
I know it sounds crazy, but sometimes that will help you see what's wrong.

I'll take a pic of it and sometimes the pic will show you what's up with it.

Things that can help with eye placement is a Mirror. You can use the Mirror on the opposite side for adjusting the side your working on. Making sure you've thin the Eye skin around the Eye up and into the oil glands. I've measure some mule deer eye skin where the Eyelashes are and I came up with 1/8 thick. Theres not alot of clay around the eye area about the size of a marble give or take.

Most likely your eyes aren't set in the head the same and or It could be the eyes have some slight differences. It only takes a slight difference for it to make it difficult to make them both look the same.

That's really great advise! I never thought of trying that, but I did, and it really helped! Thanks Nancy!

The three things I was going to suggest were already covered: the mirror, the picture, and turning it upside down. Also, when you take a picture, try printing it out 8x10 with cheap computer paper in black and white and comparing it to your reference pictures. That way you are comparing 2D to 2D.

That is some good info. Makes a heck of a difference. Biggest help that I have found also.
