The first time doing this one. I have a tanned beaver pelt that is needing to go on a hoop. It has been tanned well but I noticed that it wants to cup or curl back. I need to get it flattened out to place in the hoop with leather straps so was wondering if soaking it up before doing this would help flatten it out. Any other pointers on this first attempt for me would be much appreciated. Tons of other stuff under my belt but never a hoop like this. I sure apprecite any pointers /help.

I've never dealt with a beaver on a hoop, however, I have done a spike buck face in a willow hoop with painted turkey feathers, and ermine hanging from it, and painted the ear interiors in native american designs kinda like a dream catcher. To get it to lay flat I dampened the leather and really tightened the leather lacing on the hoop. It wasn't perfectly flat as the ears with liners and the little spikes, that were cut off the skull but left attached to the skin at the burrs, made it cup a little to the center but no curling at the edges or waviness to it. The lacing on the hide was about 1/8" apart. It was tanned with Liqua tan. I have made beaver rugs, though, and some I have done round by soaking them and stretching/ stapling to plywood and let them dry. They stayed flat after drying, so, I think you could do that and then lace it to the hoop.

Thank you for your advice. I will give it my best today.

  4. You are going to need to rehydrate it to get a nice look with what ever type of hoop you are using. Use the rehydrating recipe of your choice and lace it up while it is still at least damp. It will turn out just fine.
