Bald Eagle Mount

Wow. Just hate that everything raptor is illegal. I really respect the fact that without some laws in affect we would not see these magnificent creatures in the wild. I love collecting wild feathers that are naturally shed but as we know a feather will get u some time in the slammer. Good to be native!

I have a friend who does a few for Choctaw Indians. They want the foot only preserved so it can be attached to a pole for ceremonial purposes. The eagles come from USFWS. They are birds that were confiscated or injured and died. He opens the bag containing the bird, cuts off the feet, and then hands the bag back to the Choctaw, with instructions to get it back to the reservation without dropping one feather. There is a $5000 fine for each part of an eagle that is in illegal possession. It would only take a few looses feathers to bankrupt most of us! It is sad that the entire eagle, minus its feet, is then discarded somewhere on the reservation.

 

The fun police ,taxidermy is a good tool to help conservation ,they dont get it do they.

 

Didn't anyone notice the horrific taxidermy work? Whoever did that should be locked up.

Joey is correct. I've done a couple and I bag every feather that falls out. I go through my tumbler to insure none are in there and when they pick up the mount, they're handed s Zip lock bags listing "eagle feathers" and the number the bag contains. I don't need that grief.

 

For such a rare opportunity, the appearance of that bird is very sad.

 

I live on a (well frozen) lake. On any given day there will be several bald eagles cleaning up after the ice fishermen about 10 yards off of my point.

Three days ago a man was found dead stuck in the ice. Second generation immigrant Mexican. "Suspicious circumstances" Turns out he was a regular upstanding citizen.

I will guarantee that the majority of people who live on this lake would ne more upset with a dead eagle than a dead Mexican. There is something wrong with that.

As for me, If I had a client, and it were legal, of course I would mount their eagle. But I do not agree with the hype about the bald eagle. They are just another scavenger. (I mean no disrespect to those who worship them in their religion/heritage, none whatsoever.) The bald eagle is no more attractive in my mind, (not eyes) than a vulture. They are commonplace in many areas now, and certainly easy to photograph. Just toss some crap on the ice. Osprey - now there is a fisher of birds. And even the turkey, as Benjamin Franklin suggested, would make a better national bird. (And more fitting these days, than ever before.)

 

The hype is created by repetitious stories. The bald eagle certainly does scavenge, but make no mistake: all birds and all small game fear even his shadow. He soars higher and sees better than all other factors. He mates for life and builds a fortress for a nest. No bird is dumber than a turkey and who'd want their national symbol (the eagle has always been revered by civilizations throughout time) for Thanksgiving dinner.

 

Small game fears any shadow passing over them, whether it be a crow or kite. And myself and other turkey hunters certainly disagree about how dumb they are. As for monogamy in a bird, again he's just being lazy.

 

I'd love to work on one some day. I wouldn't do something like wrecking it with inexperience though. Such a waste of a beautiful animal. I know plenty of people in my tribal area up north who have feathers legally for regalia.

And yeah my dogs are terrified of the eagles and hawks and we can't figure out any way to help it other than walking out with them everytime they go out. That's the problem with having three small dogs and not having their protector Labrador anymore.

I've hunted Turkey's my while life. Most turkey hunters aren't that much smarter than their quarry. An entire brood will drown in a thunderstorm. You suspend a net over a pile of corn and when it pokes its head through to look around, they can't pull their heads down and escape. The are easily located on the roost as they respond to any loud noise. Snow geese and black ducks are harder to hunt. I turkey hunt only because nothing else is in season then.

 

I would fear the Golden Eagle.

 

They fear bald eagles too.
