airbrush stippling

There are other techniques to accomplish stippling, but since I own a Renegade Velocity, I use the PSR now .

Look up Pescado (Paul Borkowski Blue Ribbon Taxidermy Supply) to order the tip. He'll also explain how to use it. Basically you crank up the PSI to 50+ and away you go; I really like the tip. But you'll need a compressor that can keep up.

 

Stippling with the PSR sounds like something I would be interested in. I had an Aztec one time with a splatter tip but that was primitive at best for fine detail. Is there a video or more info out there?

 

Or without an airbrush (and more time consuming) you can use willow/vine charcoal sticks, sharpen the end to a point on sandpaper or even poster board (its that soft) and you can lightly add the effect by tapping the fish with the stick then diffusing softly with a brush. Water color pencils and soft charcoal pencils also work but I have had better results with the vine/willow sticks.

 

You can also use a double-action airbrush to accomplish stippling. It takes a little trial and error but pull the paint control all the way back and then gently/slowly push down on the air control and you'll wind up with a stipple. Like I said, trial and error to get a feel, though it never feels comfortable to me. As stated above, the few times I've use the stipple attachment to the velocity seemed much better. Just giving you an alternative in case you don't have a velocity airbrush.

 

Also more time consuming but very effective and precise is a rapidograph pen. It comes with several super fine tip sizes. You fill the reservoir with the paint of your choice (thinned) and tap away. Works great but be sure to thoroughly clean tip after use.

It is a small cap that goes on in place of the two pronged spray regulator on the end of the airbrush.

No way to duplicate the stippling done with this method. Sponges,pencils, charcoal,powders , ect..... tried everything. Nothing even remotely close to the results attained with the renegade with the psr.

This tip along with the pac valve and 75psi will give you ultra fine stippling. I thin paint by 50% with water. As you reduce the pressure the size of the stippling increases.

Pinch the air supply off to the brush by bending the air hose in one hand. Let out some air and this will cause the paint to spatter out in little dots
