After I pickle and thin my capes I put them in 3 gal of water with 3 big tablespoons of baking soda and leave in
there for 15-20 min. Is this good enough or is there a better way to do it?

Hmmmm what you like to do? I and every one whose has knowledge on tanning or those who run a tannery places a cape back in the pickle after it's shaved to make sure it has completely pickled or if needed to be reshaved. I don't neutralize after I shave a hide.
The next day I take the capes out drain and do what you have just done but I may do it a bit longer than 20 minutes. I have no other better way then do what is needed to get the best out of my work and never do any short cuts that many are looking for. If you want a short cut then the best way is to send it to a tannery, this is the better way to do it. Just my opinion.

No not looking for a shortcut. Just asking if that was ample enough time and enough baking soda to neutralize properly.
I do put back in pickle sometimes if I feel it is needed.

Just hearing what your writing is telling us you want to have a shortcut to your work and not do it properly. I say ahh I sometimes put it back in the pickle if I think it's needed. It makes you look like your a know it all and wasting our time.

Yep it's one ounce of sodium bicarbonate to a gallon of water and I do add some salt to the water. I do leave it soak in the solution for an hour. What! Did I say an hour? yep I do but that's my method.

Everytime I either shave my capes or skins, or degrease them, or Wash, I return them to the Pickle for at least 24 hours. That gives them a chance to fully Acidify again and when I'm ready to Tan - they're ready! The Pickle is the time to do it - Like I've said - its a Temporary Preserving solution allowing you to prepare the capes or skins prior to Tanning.
