Average size deer in your state

A mature deer in my area will go 200-300lbs., rack sizes between 140 to 165 are fairly abundant. I shot one with my bow last year that has 21 points and scores right at 180. It was a small bodied deer, maybe 200 lbs. and only 15" inside spread. I live in the Missouri river valley in central South Dakota.

 

In Delaware the "average" year and a half old buck will be 8 pt. weighing about 150 pounds . Our mature deer will score in the 140's and field dress at around 200 pounds.

 

I live in the south Carolina low country near Savannah GA. most deer live weight are 120 - 210 lbs for a 6 - 10 pt 2 to 4yr old deer average spread is from 12" to 20" last year my friend shot a 19" 9 pt that weighed 309 lbs 4 1/2 year old buck.

 

South Texas 160-180lbs Central Texas/hill country 120-140lbs

 

mature 4 1/2 yr olds here can hit 200 but typically are 160 to 180 lbs, rack size varys alot, due to food scources and nutrition but we get 120 to 140 inch deer regularly and several 140 to 160 deer, after that your doin something to get a bigger one around here.

 

In the pines of South Jersey I have seen 10 point bucks that only weighed 90lbs. and that is a 3.5 year old to 4.5 year old!

 

In Ohio, it will vary in body weight depending on the area and food source. Where I am located a mature buck will weigh 175-300 lb. I shot the biggest buck of my bowhunting career that scored 208" non-typical, but due to the rut, he was lucky to weigh 180 lb. There are alot of crops where I am, and they will pack in on early, I have shot does in the 150 lb range.

 

I'm in kansas and we have both mule deer and whitetails but size wise they are about the same and decent mature mule deer can easily weigh over 250 during the rut and the whitetail start at about 200 lbs. my grandpa shot a huge muley a couple of years ago and live he weighted 331 lbs. but he scored over 180 typical. The two big whitetails I got both scored over 150 and the bigger scored 163 typical and was an eight point. But in kansas, the bodies and racks ar big, we have an excellent quality deer herd.

Sounding off from Utah. We have Mule deer, and most the hunters around here wont them grow up. They will shoot them a 2x2, or spike, or the first buck they see. (we have 10 days to hunt here) But I have seen some good ones! A yearling buck will go about 75-95 pounds field dressed. But a mature Muley at 8 years old, will go 200 pounds field dressed.

 

Here in SE Montana a 7 1/2x22 form will fit many average mature whitetails (3 1/2-4 1/2year old deer) I've had a fair number of WT's go over 8" in the face and 24-25" neck. For mule deer, the same size is pretty much average early. During full rut though, the necks can get massive. Even on 3 1/2 yr. old deer. Did one yesterday 8x26. One in 100 that I do go that big. Very few people give a rip about the weight of a deer around here. No one weighs deer. But I suppose average mature is 200 lbs. dressed. We shoot 'em for the horns!

 

Here in Iowa, there are not many deer. The ones we do have are skinny and scrawny, with spindly antlers that are rarely of BC quality. Top weights on mature bucks are in the 120-135lb. range, with antlers topping out near 125". Other midwest states are much better, like Kansas, Illinois, Wisconsin, etc. We have the feed, but the genetics are poor. You could hunt a lifetime here, and never see a 140" deer. What you see on TV about Iowa is just a hoax. If you are looking to hunt deer in the midwest for trophy quality deer, Iowa should be your last choice.

 

A 7 1/4 by 18 inch form fits most of the deer I mount here in michigan. At least 75%

 

Here in MA I get the 17" neck for the first deer that the customer ever shot. The better deer are usually around 20 to 21 1/2"necks. We do get some bruisers over 200 lbs and gross over 200 points, but they are a small percentage. My heaviest deer had a 24" neck and was taken by bow, dressed out at 208, but was shy of P&Y. At the other end of the scale, our state record that netted 193" and some change, dressed out around 175 lbs. A lot has to do with whether the deer was taken before or after the rut. A 175 lb, 140 class deer is a good deer for this area.

I shot a trash buck on a South Texas ranch a few years back that field dressed 220lbs. Central TX averages about 150lbs live weight.

 

LOL you guys have monsters!!! here 80- 120 lbs :-( most are 5 - 5 3/4 nose to eye, and anywhere from a 12" to 17" neck, A 17" is a absolute Toad. Gotta love California, But we do have Big Hogs I guess thats a plus.

 

Keith, where do you get your forms fotr those small deer? I usually end up with a couple every year that are small like that. On the last one, I used a coues deer form.
The majority of the ones I get in have a 6 1/4 - 6 1/2 eye to nose and 16 -18 inch necks (at the smallest point), most are 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 yr olds with 8-10 points. 14-18 inch spreads.
