How long can I pickle?

Discussion in 'Beginners' started by Rod7, Dec 28, 2014.

  1. Quick question..Ocne I put a deer cape in the pickle, how long can it stay in the pickle if the ph is keep up? And could I pull it out of the pickle and flesh half the cape and put it back into pickle till I have time to finish fleshing?

Wouldn't leave it too long. It's not stable like Krowtann. Get it out and shave and tan.

A skin can stay in a good pickle for months if need be ...as long as the salt and ph are maintained at proper levels a skin will be fine

Had a cape in acid pickle for over a year, not a problem, tanned up fine.

A long, long time....I have had them in for over a year as well. A few months is certainly not going to hurt if the pickle is properly maintained.

Please excuse my pickle/tanning ignorance, but why would you leave a hide in a pickle for a year?

Personal piece that had to wait well past it's turn to have something done with it..a pickle bath is a good storage medium if you have the room.

  9. Not that I would leave a hide in for a year but if the ph is maintained you could leave it in for a long time. I some times don't have time to dedicate to just tanning work and I tan all my own hides so I'll have hides in the pickle for weeks at atime then take them out shave them then back in the pickle till I have time to neutralize and oil them.

  10. To answer your other question Rod7,,,, To pull a cape from the pickle to shave part of it and return it to the pickle until you're ready to finish it, is not going to cause a problem.

  11. Thanks guys! Maintaining the ph is key to success

I once started drinking on the first of the month and was pickled till the end of the month! Then quit drinking forever!
