When you send things out to be done wholesale, do you tell your customers you aren't the one mounting their item? I currently only work on mammals but have gotten a few requests for fish and birds. I have lined up someone to do my fish for me, but the customers run out the door when I mention someone else is going to mount it. I feel like a liar if I don't tell them someone else is doing it wholesale. I've had about 10 people talk to me about fish, but not a single person has left their fish with me. I'm completely fine with never taking in a fish wholesale or not, but was surprised at the extremely negative comments from a few customers. Any thoughts?

I don't know that I would leave a fish with anyone that was not going to do it. extra costs in more shipping and handling and no work to look at in your shop to see what kind of quality they are getting back?

Of course it is okay .......

What if you had a couple of employees? Who is mounting what?

Wholesale is perfectly fine. It is up to you to have a quality piece that leaves your shop. It is irrelevant as to who mounted it.

Take in fish and have someone do them.

Some people have an aversion to whole sale birds or fish and yet have no problem with WHOLE SALE tanning or WHOLE SALE freeze drying. Sending a turkey or a blue gill out to be mounted is no different than sending a cape out to a tannery or a skull out to get beetle cleaned. I will tell them I'm sending something out if I'm directly asked, otherwise, I just take it in and send it out and say thank you when they say nice job when picking it up.

Know different than building a house or going to have your car fixed

I think I'm going to have to get more fish and birds for display. I'm sure part of the reason customers walk away is that all they have to look at are my game heads. The part the really drives me nuts is when one of the customers, who was complaining about sending out the fish, was the same guy who insisted that I send his deer hide to a tannery. I guess it will come down to doing what it takes to ensure that my business thrives.

Some of the birds guys here in the north east live on sub contracted work. As Michael P said in another thread on the same subject to customers, you will get the best mount for your money. Fish blanks are someone else's work. As you said, get some samples out for display, what they see is what they will get.

I tell them I have a fish guy or bird guy or a mammal guy that works for me.

If you had some of the fish guy's work on your wall, and it better be top shelf looking fish, then they would see what they are getting back. You have to sell them on the fish guy's capabilities.
