Just curious what everyone uses for artificial turkey heads. I understand some of you may have strong opinions, but really not looking to create an argument here. Do you like using artificial or freeze dried turkey heads with your mounts? What are the brands you use? Anything you swear by? Also if your answer is freeze dried, where do you get them? I know they're very hard to find (major suppliers don't distribute).

    Thanks in Advance,
    Ryan

Boondocks freeze dried heads all the way. I have used Brett's heads for 5 years or so now and never had a bad one. Good customer service and price as well. I wouldn't even think of using an artificial head!

  3. X2 on Brett! He's a great guy with top quality heads! Just say no to anything besides freeze dried.
I have also in the past got heads from Freeze Dry by Kathy and been pleased but since I have switched exclusively to Boondocks forms its easy to get all my turkey stuff in one place.

I have only done a few turkeys. I have done artificial heads that I painted and added "hairs" from paint brushes that I bought from Anthony Eddie and Van dykes, which looked pretty good, however, I prefer freeze dried heads. I have had Boondocks and Hazel Creek do mine. I honestly I couldn't say one is better than the other as both where excellent in both the product quality and customer service. To answer your question on where to get them, I get them from the turkey and send them in. I feel that you should get the head that was on YOUR turkey back for YOUR mount. If the head is too shot up, then that's different.

Boondocks it is! Thanks for your help everyone. As you could probably tell I was hesitant to use artificial because the feathers are not there, and to me it would be a big pain to remove and place those feathers in the head. Does everyone paint their own heads? Looks like a lot of white (bass belly white?), pale blue, and gill red. Anything I'm missing?

There is in instructions and a paint schedule on boondocks website. There are also some on here that you would have to find with a search. I use super hide white, gill red, Widgeon blue and pithlo blue from polytranspar.

X4 on Brett or is it 5 GREAT service ,,the only thing you may be missing is don't try to achieve a blue cheek color right out of the bottle use misting and blending to get a more lifelike look.

May I suggest purchasing the DVD on painting turkey heads by Harry Whitehead. It is available at Taxidermy Training Unlimited.

And CapnMike's turkeys look real gooood! So I would consider any suggestions he has. I have also used Boondocks and also like Ravenel Freeze Dry Services in Covington, GA. Have not tried Cally Morris's yet, but I am sure they are quality as well from what I have heard. Ravenel makes a really good artificial as well. ;)
