Huge fisher skull

Discussion in 'Skulls and Skeletons' started by skullcollecter, Jan 10, 2015.

  1. I got this fisher skull the other day, its quite a bit larger than the big male I have, from the other thread, it was also the biggest fisher this trapper had ever seen. It also has a weird bone growth near the eye socket. A lynx and the other fisher for size comparison...

    I would say a very old male. Possibly your other one is a female.

    No I haven't but I should, it would be interesting to compare it to ones others have to get a better idea for size.

    @Sea Wolf
    Its incisors are in pretty bad shape- broken, but apart from that all the other teeth are there and in good shape. It does point to it being old but its bit harder to tell age from the teeth when they are like this because it might have bitten on something hard or broke its front teeth hunting etc... I would imagine that if they where worn down and spent with age the molars especially should be in bad shape to.The really prominent sagittal crest also points to it being an old male I guess. As for the other one I was told it was a male by the trapper but I have no way of knowing for sure if it is or isn't...

    ..after you finish cleaning the skull..post some measurements..I would like to know how big this guy is..thanks!

  6. Well here it is, I forgot about this thread and site lol Anyway the fisher measures about 5 1/2" long and 3 1/2" wide, quite a bit bigger than my other one but no idea how it compares to others...

    Anyway the weird growth on the zygomatic arch looks like a break or something, the bone is completely separated and there is a weird piece of bone sticking out. Also the backs of the lower jaws have some weird curving I have no idea what that is, hopefully it shows up in the pics....

    ...it looks great..maybe that break is an injury that healed makes it unique..

  8. Yeah definitely unique, just need to degrease it... I was wondering about the size (5 1/2" long by 3 1/2" wide) do you know how it compares to others or?

    That side/region of the skull where this break/growth/whatever it is also looked like it ha a tumour or a strange growth it can be seen here in this picture

    I believe most fishers average out at 5"... so 5.5" is definitely on the large/XL size for a fisher. I can't say much about the width but he seems like a huge bruiser. Pretty jealous!

  11. Yes you are right, I actually just saw that when you mentioned it, I figured the deformed side was the one where the bone was like that. The bone on the other side however is completely normal.

    That other fisher is about 5" long but its width is just shy of 2 3/4" or so.

    ...looks like this fisher has been through a lot..a possible tumor on the the right cheek and a healed injury on the left zygomatic process..I'm working on some fisher skulls too,,some are juveniles and some are adults...I think I got a few that's just over 5 inches long..

    5.5" is the biggest fisher I've ever cleaned, too. It was a monster, AND it was a female! I believe it was 3.25~ wide. I reckon that's about as large as they come. Any bigger would truly be record size!

    It's a bit like finding a 3" long muskrat skull . I've cleaned hundreds and only ever seen 2 muskrats hit 3"!
