Can you get more stretch out of a late season deer cape?

Cory Keep an eye on quality!

Perfect example: I took a buck in on November 10th that measured 8x18x21 (meat). I tanned the deer and it let out to 8x21x26.

If so, why didn't the 8 measurement let out any? Just curious.

Hell I want the info to your tannery, gain 5 inches on the neck. WOW. Maybe a cape snake. Or maybe they send you the wrong cape Back. Lol

Come on guys! He's not making something it wasn't! Don't you get it? I shot a buck likewise that I could grab the hide and shake it back-and-forth like the loose skin on a dog. It measured 8 x 21 x 23… After tanning I got 8 x 23+ by 26.

I just don't understand it George. You have taken in African work… And like you said what it is is what it is after tanning! And a lot of times you have to work the skin. I know you do bears… And there is a lot of "let out"..if you've ever done rugs/life-size etc.! After tanning. This is no different,is this deer dropped weight… Rather quickly. But his skin was much like me when I lost 40 pounds loose and baggy LOL

Measuring the meat is ridiculous on a rut worn buck like this… Common sense dictates you take with the deer gives you!

Keep up the stupid fight ...this is ridiculous LOL

There is nothing wrong with replacing a full neck on a deer that still has a skin to do it! LOL

And to answer your question Cory… You didn't gain extra liength on your eye to nose measurement… Because you don't have the expansion of skin at that point on that body that you do where the neck "swells" So you will find extra width on the skullcap backside of the eyes, upper brow....etc. where is ithere is extra meaty tissue and I suspect bruising etc. from fighting during the rut. If you take care for measurements you will see this.

George The older I get, the better I was.

Old Boar, do you REALLY get back a bigger hide after tanning than you had before. I guess I just fell off the onion truck cause damned if I ever have. In fact, I had to stretch hell out of them to get them to FIT the size I began with. I remember when I used DP I could have stretched them over a pickle barrel but not if I used that pickle on the hide first. And before you answer, remember, you said you picked up 2 and 3 inches on the neck when you did, but HE SAID he picked up 3 and 5 inches. On an 18 inch neck? Really?

How about a heavy person that loses significant weight quickly???? Isn't that skin still there? Why would it be any different with an animal? I promise you that I don't know everything (once you feel like you do than you become angry and set in your ways, never getting any better) but I do know how to read a skin. All good taxidermists I know test fit skins to forms. Why do they do this if not necessary???? Just go off meat measurements! What about thick hides? I've shaved whitetails that had close to 1/2" thick skin..... Gonna gain an inch right there. I shave and tan all my own deer. Been doing it for 20 yrs and stand behind my work and guarantee quality.

Wild brookies.....your barking up the wrong tree. Calling someone a joke is not a good practice unless you have seen their work and want to back up your work. I happen to be going to the PA show this year..... I haven't competed since 2008 (which happens to be the year I won the breakthrough award in your beautiful state). Want to compare pieces ;)? Hell, we can have our own little competition here.... I would love to see a few pics of your deer and a bird or 2. Can someone help me post a couple pics? My server won't let me include images. I would be happy to let it all out for people to judge. Just need an email to send the pics to

"Mine's bigger than yours" isn't going to impress anyone here so you might try Facebook. Winning any "award" is like claiming you fired "expert"on the Boy Scout Range. I have two WASCO Awards and 4 Breakthroughs. Now what does that have anything to do with this subject? BTW rotate your pictures before you post them so I don't get a stiff neck. Nice work.

Obviously you compete George so you will understand that this is what it proves.... The desire to learn. It also proves that I know how to read a skin on more than one creature. I take great pride in my work and tend to get defensive when someone calls me a hack or thinks my work is a joke. I have seen the work of those people and I would love for them to display the work they choose to put out. The old saying that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones applies here.
Sorry for the twisted pics ??? They are showing right side up on my screen.

Btw.... I have 5 breakthrough's so mines bigger LMAO

they might stretch but will the fur and wiskers/ eyelashes fall into place?? do not put to much work in to something that should just fit in place.. my 2 cents TAS,,,

Thank you. I'm not trying to argue and you would have to know me personally to get my sarcasm and odd wit. The bottom line is that you must read the skin and listen to what it tells you. It is possible for a cape to let out a significant amount if it is a deer that is worn out and has lost a large percent of his weight. It is up to the taxidermist to decide how to handle it.

Tas, I actually didn't know we were "arguing". Seemed like a normal conversation to me. Obviously Dane in new here and we just had to have an "understanding" before it got too heated. And if we have "160 years" between us, Dane is one OLD SOB.

I don't argue... I agree to disagree! I only have 24 yrs experience. George, that leaves you to pick up the other 136. You did say something about being around when my grandpa was going through puberty!

I agree with George. I measure right after caping. I never have problems meeting those measurement's. I mount what was brought to me when they harvested it. I do stretch the cape but only to make it easier for me to taxi everything into position.
