That is some great stuff! I love the idea of a "duck decoy" made from an actual duck! Now I want one!

 

Do you have any advice on how to complete a decoy mount?

 

flatten out the bottom of body form.....best to remove feet unless you need the "clipped toe" attached......you can overfill the sides to give in wide planform shape,and sew it up loosely like you would a fish...

 

brydman, i have only mounted a few dozen ducks and havent ventured too far from the original method that i was taught. When you sat remove the legs, do you mean to just cut the leg of right at the knee and remove the whole leg and femur bone?

 

When I do decoy mounts I remove the legs just like I would if I were mounting them separately. What this means is that I cut a ring around the leg right where the scales end and the feathers begin. The tiny little tube of skin that went around the ankles will vanish into the thicker flank feathers so there's no need to do anything to it other than clean it like the rest of the skin.
Even though you wont be using the feet, it helps a lot to go ahead and anchor the leg skin into the proper place on the form. A couple of sewing pins will do the trick and this is where the little bit of leg skin can help since it will easily hold pins.
If you don't secure the legs into place it can be a real pain to get the skin to taxi into its proper location.
