30 bison skulls

Discussion in 'Skulls and Skeletons' started by tagged out taxidermy, Jul 21, 2016.

  1. I have 30 bison skulls clean and ready to whiten. Does anybody have suggestions on whitening them all at the same time? I have 2 - 30 gallon tanks I was thinking about throwing them in with peroxide.

  2. Don't forget to shield it from the light! I always use peroxide as well, in a bucket with a couple small holes in the lid to prevent it from exploding.

With that many to do, save your peroxide and paste them. If you haven't tried this before, go to a hair salon store and get a container of Basic White powder and a couple of bottles of 40 VOL clear.

  4. Ok I have the salon stuff. That is what I use mostly.

  5. With that many get a lot of simply white and go to the pool store to get your peroxide by the gallon you can even get gymnast calk by the pound on Amazon and that works just as well and is cheaper then the hair salon stuff

I have not tried it but I have also heard that chalk or talcum powder will also work. Essentially, the Basic White powder is mostly only there to hold the peroxide in place on the surface. If you go to a pool or spa supply place make sure you specify that you want "Shock for NON CHLORINATED POOL". If they have any and it isn't a ridiculous price, double check the ingredients. It should be 27% peroxide. Be very careful with this as at this strength it is dangerous. 40 VOL peroxide is 12%. If you get the pool strength stuff on you you will be very sorry .. fast. If you splash just a drop in an eye, you will lose the sight in that eye permanently so make sure you wear eye protection with it. Keep kids and pets far away from it.

  8. Magnesium carbonate is the powder you want about $12/pound and the peroxide is in a blue jug just can't think of name right now and last I bought about 2 months ago was $20/gallon on sale normally $25/gallon

If you go looking for the pool strength stuff, think outside the box. There are several name brands to look or ask for. Pool Mate and Baquacil are two. Look anywhere that stocks pool chemical supplies. Even Walmart possibly. I found gallon jugs of the Pool Mate brand for $11.00 a gallon at a store called Job Lot. Local NE area store chain but you probably have something similar. It will all be pretty much the same thing, 27% peroxide, but check your labels always.

  10. I am not big on the high strength peroxide. I like to air on the side of cation. How ever cheep is better as long as it looks good. Most of these won't be completely white per customers request.

For quantity, you can get a gallon or two of the stronger stuff and dilute it with clear water to make the same 12% strength as the 40 VOl stuff. Will give you plenty enough to do all those skulls. Make sure the water does not have a high iron content if you do. Bottled water would be fine.

  12. Thank for all the info. I really appreciate it.

Post some pics! I got 10 at the shop right now, and that's a good pile, I'd love to see 30!

This is one I did with vol 40 and basic white. Make a nice smooth paste and spread it on. I wrap it in paper towels and spray with more peroxide. Put in a plastic bag and under a heat lamp for a day. Rinse off and put back under the lamp for another day. 30 will take you a while but it's cheep and works good.

Wow that looks great! I am surprised the paste worked so well. I am doing 5 right now, I submerge them in a warm peroxide bath. How much do you sell them for?
