SHIPPING COST????

Discussion in 'Beginners' started by Edrevord, Jan 20, 2017.

  1. Ups charges by the size of the box because it takes up more room on the truck....your one McKenzie box takes up as much room as 10-20 smaller packages. Through my ammo company I can ship 70# of ammo in a small box very cheap ($12)anywhere in the country, but if I go over X dimension my negotiated rate is no longer valid and the price more than triples. Ups and fed ex love my business because we ship hundreds of boxes a week, and they don't take up much room. Weight means next to nothing anymore, they charge for space

Welcome to the family my friend. Shipping cost are part of the process. I offset them by volume purchases of $1000 or more to receive 5-10% discounts. I realize this isn't practical for beginners. To me, the most expensive shipping method would be to pick up supplies myself. A wasted day of my life, and time is the one resource I don't care to waste.

  3. Kinda funny how people view things completely different. Sure its a lost day of work. But I enjoy getting in the truck with the wife driving 6 hours to pick up a load. ::) Viewing the county side , eating some Popeyes along the way. Talking about crap we aint never gonna really do.. ;) Maybe get a room act like we are 18 again. :-[ :-[ Just getting the hell out of the shop for a day or two sure helps clear that " man I don't feel like mounting no %^*$ deer today! " It can be medicine for the brain and burn out. Now that I think about it, It may not be about saving a few $ but saving me. 8) :)

As a matter of fact we are planning a little trip to north Mississippi in about three weeks. maybe I can work a stop in to visit Joey .

My wife and I drive to Research, a couple of hours round trip, on Saturday and like buckfever said, we make a date day out of it. We've had some good times together with deer and elk forms sticking up out of the bed of the truck.

X's 2.... but instead of "getting a room" I have to take my wife to yard sales and flea markets! :-\ Plus....it is the most profitable days of the year with an average savings of over $1000 each trip! Minus the Flea Markets and restaurants it would only be a four hour trip for me!! $250 an hour.............wished I could do it everyday!! :)

    Come on over!

I do agree with making a fun trip out of a pick-up, and I have stopped by a few places and picked up stuff in the past. But, just to make a pick-up as a sole destination trip rarely works out for me.

Do you have a profit and loss statement from UPS? Do you have information on their over head? Do you have access to their book keeping? To make a statement that infers that UPS is practicing something unethical and possibly illegal, I would think that you have some sort of paperwork to back up your accusations. I can make a blanket statement without proof about any company and it means nothing. I can pretty much guarantee that there are taxidermists that charge less than you do with similar or even better quality than you offer. Since you charge more than them and your quality is so close, you must be scamming your customers.

how do you equate taxidermy prices to weight ? look at what i posted. according to the formula provided on Mckenzies web site you can have two boxes that weigh the same.

    # 1 box measures less than 1000 cubic inches, that box is charged its actual weight, this is ethical, moral and the right thing to do.

    # 2 box is over the 1000 cubic inch mark and will be charged at a much higher rate even though it weighs the same, thats not right, moral or ethical.

i understand about size and less packages fit on the truck. i just think that each package, every package should be charged according to weight, thats all.

i also never ever said what UPS is doing is illegal as far as unethical, maybe so. i mean how do you justify charging more, sometimes a lot more for a larger package that weighs the same as a much smaller package ?

as miketraux said above he can ship 70lbs of ammo for 12 dollars but if he goes over a certain dimension on packaging his price more than triples even though it weighs the same.

thats not ethical. 2 deer shoulder forms in the same box wouldnt weigh 70 lbs but you will pay a lot more than 12.00 to get that package. i know we have to pay those over inflated prices but that doesnt mean its right, thats all i am saying.

i guess you could also say the shippers can charge what they want because we will pay it anyway, not to many other choices.

while we are at it, what if airlines did the same thing for checked luggage, instead of a flat fee, would that be ok. my suitcase is smaller it goes for 12.00

your suitcase is bigger, weighs less and goes for 67.00 i guess you would be ok with that.

Do you KNOW the reason they charge the way they do? Do you have the information from their business plan? To say I don't agree with something is one thing, to say it is a scam is another. I'm not saying it is or isn't a scam. I'm not even saying I agree with their practice, however, I'm not willing to say a company is scamming people without proof. They may just have a good reason for doing it that you haven't thought of.

yadayadayada....this argument is old enough to vote. As a beginner you have not gathered the shipping information you need to include in your mounting prices. Over a period of time you will be able to price the shipping costs of various supplies like deer manikins, etc.. These costs to you must be considered in your price to mount a deer or other jobs as they are a constant cost. Also if you're smart you should begin to anticipate that shipping costs will rise...so add 20% to your current shipping costs to anticipate future costs.
UPS...FEDEX...and USPS set their shipping prices on the same basis so they can stay in business and so should you. Outrageous...Scam...Unethical ...etc are the words applied to shipping costs by uneducated people who do not have the knowledge to remain in business.....and probably won't be here for long. Just my honest opinion. JL

I think we may have lost the complainers a page ago. Hopefully, we can refer others to this thread and they will actually listen.

  19. I am fortunate enough to live 45 min away from the company I order my forms and supplies from. I call them in the morning and can go pick it up at noon therefore I don't have to deal with these issues. if you want something bad enough you will pay for it, at least that's what the shippers think
