Nictitating Membrane

Richard, I would say it is worth the minimal time involved. I have seen the same thing on some of my friends' and family's mounts when I visit. It is often glaringly obvious. Sometimes the eyes make the mount and to be as life like as possible should be the goal. I think adding more realism to your mounts will set you apart from your competitors; particularly when it involves just a few extra minutes or work. It only takes one customer that knows what he or she is looking at to pick your work apart, which may lead to lost business. Word of mouth travels fast.

 

I pretty much always add them on mammals. It takes very little time to convincingly replace them.

I always do the nic's but then I see other work from people who dont and their clients perhaps dont care?

 

I woulds say that it's not that they don't care, they just don't know.

 

I don't use them on my commercial mounts.

 

its like should you keep the ear buts in the ear or not. some say yes & some say no & some say they dont care.

 

When I started adding them, I made sure to explain to my repeat customers why the corner of their eyes were different and that I was upping my game and giving them the most up to date, realistic mount at no extra charge. I also explained the use of nics to new customers.
I've tried the plastic ones and found them to be realistic looking but a little difficult to position them to be symmetrical. I found that I can achieve a symmetrical and realistic nic with Apoxie Sculpt in a matter of a few minutes.

 

They go in all my mounts ! I explain this to new customers and that's what sets some people's work fro m others .

I put them in all my mounts. They take so little time to sculpt in that there's really no reason not to add them. I tried to do the trick we learned at the Yoxathon, but I could never get it to work so I just use apoxy sculpt.

 

First I sculpted them...Then I used the plastic ones...Then someone showed me the coffee cup lid trick..Now I use those and it takes about 10 seconds.

 

Go to your local convenience store and pilfer a small stack of the thin black plastic coffee cup lids. You can cut them to shape and slide them in. They're thinner than the actual thing, but are cheap and easy. It takes less than 5 minutes to install both of them. If you want to 'thicken' them up, put a coat of Modge Podge over them to give them a bit more depth. I say the 5 minutes is worth the extra realism.

 

The real nics from the deer can be used also.

 

I don't know what could be any easier than smearing a dab of black Apoxie Sculpt in the front corner and then using a swipe of an artists brush with some Safety Solvent to shape them up. I do it on all the commercial mounts. I don't say squat to customers about any of it. Sometimes educating a client simply makes an idiot out of him.

 

I always put them in, the eyes don't look right without them. I like the plastic ones for deer.
