Empty freezers

    What's everyone do with your empty freezers? I started putting bags of ice in it. I hate to shut it off, cause here in the South we have "Dirt Dobbers" ( not sure what they are actually called) and if you leave one not running they will build nests in the motor. Do y'all fill them up with something to keep them from running so much? I won't need it again till hunting season.

    Jugs full of water, when my freezers get low. I have yet to get to the point of shutting them off, but then again I don't have that many, on purpose.

    What is this "empty freezers" you speak of? This is a foreign concept to me. ;D

    I just unplug them and raise the lid to keep mold growth from occurring. It's really not good to shut down any refrigeration unit for an extended period.

    It's really not good to shut down any refrigeration unit for an extended period. I've never heard that. In the northern parts of the U.S. we only run our a/c units (same setup as a freezer) 3 months out of the year. just wondering why turning off a freezer for 4 or 6 months would hurt it.

    I shut down the freezers in my butcher shop 8 months every year . So far I hav'nt had any issues

    I have 8 freezers... I wish I could shut one off!!!. I keep buying more! I guess it's a good thing... if it were me, I'd just shut it off till I needed it!

    I have a walk-in cooler/freezer and shut it down every year after deer cutting is done. Been doing that for 20 years with no problem. Heard you can have problems MOVING a freezer.Was told that there is some "wear dust" that forms within the cooling cores and could re-settle in a plug somewhere and stop the freon from getting through. Don't know how true that is. was told never to buy a used freezer for those same reasons. I have never shut down my chest freezers so I don't know what would happen..lol Hope your freezers are always full. Ryan..see you in August. JL

    Thanks for the replies. We designate one freezer just for "raw" stuff. That way we only have to keep a close eye on one. Once something is tanned it's put in another freezer. We have 3 total, plus a little guy that usually just has beer and soda, but has been known to store a duck or two. Once all the raw stuff is tanned, we wind up with the one big freezer empty. I've started filling it with bags of ice, and I think it'll be fine.
