Ok, so for some reason I decided my first practice bird out of school should be a Canada Goose in an advanced pose. The picture is a still in progress, I need to prop and card the wings and keep straightening feathers, so I'm looking for any tips and tricks.. Also this is just a personal practice mount and would greatly appreciate brutally honest criticism! I'm new to taxidermy and am only trying to make myself better! Also I had severe feather loss on the neck, any recommendations for the future to prevent it and/or a fix to make this guy look better? Thanks so much!

Congratulations on getting your first solo mounted. From your post I see you realize that a Canada is not a good idea to start with, but the fact that you did, and got it mounted is impressive. My advice would be the same I tell everyone weather its birds or mammals. Pick ONE thing you don't like and try and fix that on your next one. Then once you get that down, pick another issue and fix that. It takes practice, practice, practice and you need to take it in steps. Many times one thing will lead to many problems, and if you fix that one thing it will alleviate the others. Regardless of what anyone says, YOU Have to figure out what works for you.

As for the feather loss on the neck... when did it happen? Was it there when you skinned, wheeled, washed, dried? Or did it happen when you mounted?

taxi the neck skin forward and put insect pins in bare spots like pinching skin together...one pin in front and back then back "brush" neck feathers to give neck a fuller look

    Thanks the replies!
Feather loss started at drying and just got worse when mounting.
    Thanks for the tip!

It did yeah, and I've been doing some reading and am seeing that's definitely an issue, so I'll have to find a more suitable blower.

  7. lightly mist the neck with your air brush using black paint to cover those areas.
