Ear / Antler Set

I'm curious as to what others might suggest. I have my antlers set based off my measurements from the real skull. I'm setting the ear butts and the antler on each side is extremely close to the ear. The base of the antler is also basically touching the ear butt. The form is a Meder form from McKenzie. Just curious if you think the ear butts are placed too high? I don't think so, but the more I look at this, the more I question why the clearance is so tight. I know ears are fairly close anyways, but I feel I'm too tight. Any responses is greatly appreciated!

Hopefully the image is clear enough to see as I had to decrease the size of the file. If there is another imagine you would like me to post from another angle, I can do that too.

    Thanks,
    Steve

The Meder form has a very short antler shelve as to most of the skull plate needs to be cut off, also using plastic liners and butts your stuck with the shape. Side angle pic.

Thanks for your input. Here is different angle. I can take a different picture when I get back to my shop.

    Thanks,

I'd say from what I see, you have the antlers tipped too far back, I've found on those meder forms, throw some of those measurements out and go by the accepted guidelines for antler placement.

Here is some other side images. At first I thought I tipped too far back. I still could be, but not 100%. Not sure I like this particular form.

    Thanks,

I stand by what I said, tipped too far back, and I agree, I'm not a big fan of those forms.

Hard to tell but maybe too far back as well. Most of the deer I see measure around 2 1/4" from center of eye to closest part of the bur.

Thanks 3Bears. I haven't had any issues with any other forms until this one. If I tilt the antlers more forward the center of the skull cap won't match the center line on the form where they meet. I'm about 2 fingers from the burr to the back endge of eye.
So I'm at a loss on what I need to do, and I'm not a person that settles for "half Ass". I've moved on to other deer on other stands waiting to decide what I should do on this.

The old "2 finger rule" is kind of goofy. Who's fingers are the standard? I too am not one to settle for half assed, as long as the center line matches close in relation to side to side, you are good. Each form was sculpted to fit the sculptor's idea of what it should look like, that doesn't necessarily make it correct. Set the antlers to where they look correct to you, following typical guidelines, then test fit the cape, it will tell you where they go.

  12. The antlers definitely need to be be tipped forward a bit. That ridge on the top of the skull should rise up above that ridge on the foam. That is just the start of the "brain ridge" if that is what you are concerned about.

Don't know if this helps but what I do is take a measurement before skinning from each tip of main beam to tip of nose then when setting antlers on form I try to match the measurements taken to get the right angle on antlers so they are not to far back or forward. I'm by no means an expert on the subject but seems to work for me
