Glossary of Taxidermy terms

    I see occasional posting on the open blog which describes various methods of restoring color and damage to old mounts. It comes out of the AMNH and YPM and funded by an IMLS grant

    In Their True Colors - Developing New Methods for Recoloring Faded Taxidermy

    The latest version had a glossary of taxidermy terms which is fairly accurate to describing the various lexicon that we use freely. I don't know if George Dante read over and suggested any corrections, as he is involved in portions of the grant (at least I think he is). You can read the blog here:

    Most of the terms I’ve heard weren’t printable and usually single syllables.

    Needle..........................................Finger punch

    Mounting stand..............................A distinct form of poor posture used while hunched over a mount........eventually becomes permanent

    Bondo...........................................A two part hallucinogen

    Reference material.........................Pictures to remind you how bad you suck

    Air brush.......................................Handy device used in the stimulation of cuss words

    Shop.............................................Prison

    Glass eyes.....................................Just a look we taxidermist get after 80 hours a week in the prison (see shop)

    Sewing..........................................An eternal form of punishment.....also a leading cause of "glass eyes"

    Overhead.......................................Cost of all of the above plus emergency room visits

    Profit.............................................? ? ? ???

    You know, for a "Glossary" of Taxidermy Terms, I have to say Ron's is probably more accurate for us. From the outside that was rather complete, though I would argue that SOME of the items hardly are peculiar to taxidermy. Things like "excelsior" and "shellac" are rather universal and can be found in most dictionaries. As far as manikins being anatomically correct, they must not have been around in the early Touchstone, Van Dyke, and Ivan Harvey days.

    I still have my hand-written critiques and most of my correspondence from JW Ellwood! I keep thinking they'll be worth money some day......

    Return of the Dead: Taxidermy in Contemporary Culture

    They are worth money - just not very much.

    There was another post describing taxidermy, its' revival, and all sorts of various trivia on the same venue. They must be wrapping up the grant and finishing some promised updates.

    This post mentions the world show, taxidermy shows and all sorts of tid-bits.

    You are correct museum man. It doesn't seem that long ago for the link that referenced some of my early work years ago, but it has been 18 years. Care and conservation hasn't changed much but this .pdf is always a good read.

    Bondo gives you very acute vision. After mixing it you can actually see the little wings on the angels that dance in the window light! Without it you will swear it is just dust!

    Great definitions Ron! A few abbreviations...

    COBMBIL (Caped out by my brother-in-law)......means the cape looks like it was hacked off with a sling blade
    CUNF (See you next Friday).......................means you'll be looking at that mount for a while
    IDT (I've done taxidermy)......................means they are looking for a huge discount
    USMF (You shrunk my fish).......................means the mounted fish is larger than it was, but not as large as their ego
    ISUB (I'm sending you business)..............means they expect you to mount their stuff for free
