I have used it for about 8 years or so, used both the 30 and 40 year. stays flexible and clear. I also use it for hide paste on fish, birds, and small mammals where drying time is preferred to be slow. I try to buy it in bulk when on sale locally, stores well, even when the tube is opened. I have seen no issues. paul

Use it for years. Just seal the fin with either lacquer or shellac first.

 

Hey Cecil! I haven't used the Elmers for a very long time. I use a brand of gel gloss mediums that are far better. Super heavy gel gloss first 2 coats then paint fish and usual clear coats, then before customer picks up a final coat of regular heavy gel gloss medium. Only one brand works the best, and I never back fins with silkspan etc, I will use clear surgical tape on damaged or broken fins when needed before 2nd coat. Yours Truly B.Castle

 

not really a fish guy but have done my fair share. what are the advantages of using the caulk? always interested to learn new tricks. ive always used modge podge for fins and had good results.

 

I completely agree and not only relabeled but marked up, besides paint and forms and eyes most everything else I get local. including modge podge. might try out the caulk next time though.

 

I use it sometimes. Only I pump it all out into a container and thin it with water so it brushes on smoothly.

 

Where can you buy that clear alex acrylic caulk silicone 40 yr at.

 

I just started back mounting fish after a few years. Some of you may remember I lost my shop to a fire back in 2014. I was used to use DermaGrip Fin and Fish Coat Clear and Silkspan. Anyway, don't remember any issues back then but now my fins get real wavy after drying! Even the tail will do it a little with the pectoral being the worst. Tried sealing first with lacquer fungicidal sealer on last fish but didn't seam to help much. Any suggestions?

 

I typically just mold and cast my own, none of these problems that way. In the event that I do use the real fins I have good success sealing them first with a couple coats of lacquer or acrylic sealer. I will then build them up a bit with Mod-podge and finish filling them out with the acrylic caulk mentioned above. Using this method I haven't had trouble with curling at all. I typically just get the caulk at any hardware store or even Wal-mart if I have to. Also make sure you seal both sides of the fin thoroughly or they will still curl.

 

After they dry completely, I seal all fins with 2 coats of shellac then 2 coats of ModPodge. Works for me. Good luck.

 

go to a construction supply company and ask for concrete bonder sometimes refered to as " milk" its a little thin but can be made thicker by evaporating in a tray or pan outside or keep as is just need more coats dries clear ,bonds great ,flexible ...i use 2-3 coats of thickened and a finish coat of thin

 

JLs system works good for me.
