Salting capes

Discussion in 'Beginners' started by Lonewolf_8126, Jan 30, 2018.

  1. I am going on an exotics hunt in Texas in March. We won’t have access to freeze our hides for the return trip home.

Can hides be salted without turning and splitting? Any insight will be great.

I guess you can, however, since you are taking the time to flesh and salt, a few more minutes to split and turn, for me, would be the added insurance worth the time taken.

  3. gotta turn and split them. someone else might could chime in on this idea, possibly you could take you a tote and mix salt into it full of water till its a heavily saturated solution. a "brine" if you will. throw your capes in it to transport home. if you aren't gonna turn and split to salt them I think this would be your best bet. again double check with someone else I could wrong. just an idea

  4. thanks for the insight, I was just curious. My full intention is to turn and split each cape! I was inquiring more in case I don’t have enough time to split them all. My wife and I alone are able to harvest 6 anminals, and we have a few other hunters with us.

I would turn and salt if I was you . Then you wouldn't have any problems later .

I have a customer who wanted to cape and salt his mule deer from Wyoming. He brought it to me salted, not split or turned at all. What a nightmare to try to split everything and turn the ears. I had to rehydrate to get it done. It did turn out ok, but, it took extra time and a little frustration.

You would be way better off to freeze them with out doing anything. Time will not be your friend. Find a source of dry ice, and place each cape in a separate small styrofoam cooler with dry ice. Refresh the dry ice as needed.
