Help With Whitetail Ears

Discussion in 'Beginners' started by Williamson, Dec 29, 2018.

  1. im about to mount my deer tomorrow. I pulled the cape out of the pickle and thinned it down and test fit everything. My problem is with the ear liners i have a pair of med and large ear liners in which i need a size between medium and large. Will i be able to do the ears with clay and do away with ear liners or put the med liners in and fill whats left with clay?

I think given the choice I would use the large earliners and trim them down to size over using clay with the medium earliner. If you don't want to cut the larger earliners down I would use bondo instead of clay.

I use medium on 95% of whitetail you want some slack. Make sure you have the edges turned all the way and make sure they are where they belong on liner and card the edges. Use a good glue

  4. It has about 1/2” slack on one side

I can't possibly see what you see but if you do like I say put the edges where they belong and rebuild the ear butts properly you should be fine. If not take the measurements across the ear and the length and use the one that fits

  6. My large ear liners are for a upright mount. Im doing a full sneak so i will have to use the medium ear liners. What type of bondo do you recommend?

Bondo brand made by 3M and sold at Wal-Mart and auto parts store. Wal-Mart will be cheaper than most any auto parts store. Around here they sell it in quart and gallon size containers.

  8. I have some 3m fiberglass bondo that has 1/2” fiber glass strands in it will that work or does the strands need to be smaller?

Get the DVD from McKenzie Whitetail A to Z by Rick Carter and the Taxidermy Training Unlimited DVD mounting a mule deer by Manny Chavez and they will show you in detail how to do Bondo ears. Manny uses the 3m with the fiber glass strands in it.These DVDs are packed with awesome info. They are a must have.

Don't use Bondo for ear adhesive to earliner unless you like thick ears that will drum

Right on 3bears. What we are talking about is using the bondo method instead of what the OP suggested, which was using clay.

  12. Ive done went the bondo route. Got them feathered out and thin. None on the inner or outter earliner just on the edges so i wouldnt think drumming will be an issue, but ive been wrong before lol
