Hey guys, what do you use to touch up the antlers at the base of the skull after whitening?
I have about a 2 inch bleach spot that I touched up with minwax. I don’t like the shiny look it gave to it.

    Thanks!

  2. You could go over what you have already done with a flat clear coat, will help with some of the shine. I've used potassium permanganate in the past with good results but be careful with that stuff.

  3. I use a wood stain (I believe its walnut color but can check the brand and color when I get home) It works crazy well is a very fast way to get any lost color back. Its so easy to blend back that I don't worry about how much I loose from the whitening process. Many years ago it took me a while to find the right color so I make sure to buy the same brand/color each time

I use potassium permanganate with good results as above. Occasional stains or paints. Try the Advanced Search on here. It's sort of hidden now but it still works. Try staining antlers, antler stain ... similar search terms. There are a LOT of posts on here saying what people use and even how they use it.

Hey Mason creek, does that stain leave the antlers looking shiny?
I use that stain in a different color and it’s shiny wherever I touch up. That’s why I want something else.

  7. No-matches everything around it perfectly

  8. Well Jordon-good question after I looked closer when you mentioned the shine and after I replied. You are correct there is a slight gloss but I didn't even notice it and I've done hundreds with no one else either

I'm in the same boat and need to fix a few that the peroxide nuked. A few people here have recommended an antler staining kit from Vandykes but I checked the other day and they dont seem to sell it any more. They are selling just two colors of knoblochs a reddish brown and chocolate brown. It says they are alcohol based and can be thinned with water to match colors. Anybody use these products?

Thank you mason creek for getting back to me. The color I used was really shiny. I’ll check out that color and see if there’s a difference between the two.

I’m trying to find that deglosser, Canada seems to lack on some simple products.

  12. Hit it with a wire brush it dulls the shine

Have you ever got a wood stain drip on your white skull? Any ideas or tips to get that out?

Wasn't using stain per se but a 50/50 mix of turp and linseed oil. 3 small drips on a skull (mine fortunately). Never really did get it all out. I now stain all antlers either upside down or with the skull completely bagged and wrapped to protect it.

I agree with the wire brush comment. Takes the shine out when its dry. I use gel wood stain.

  19. Does anyone know if potassium permanganate stained antlers can still be coated with the 50/50 turpentine, linseed oil?

I've never tried this but maybe see if you can locate a spike or other unwanted antler and try? Maybe lighten it a bit with peroxide first, bring the color back with PP and then try the linseed mix? I do not know if the PP will resist the turp or will it make a smooth coating? It would be a good experiment to try and see what happens.
