on another subject, if hearing the truth, hurts your feelings or makes you feel threatened or offended. then dont ask for opinions.

if you do ask and happen to get slapped, then just learn from it. its not that hard and it always make you a better person. not getting slapped or being told the truth, living a life of being coddled and protected from hurt feelings makes you a snowflake and part of the problem we are facing today.

just look at how dysfunctional our Government is...they are to afraid to tell the truth and do whats right.

 

Todays "Snowflake " was a "Moonbeam " in the "old " days.

Even though we have had a little spat or two over the many years, blaming George is silly.. If Ole George offends you then you had better not leave the house... The real world will chew you up and spit you out and never slow down.... There is nothing wrong with hearing the truth even if it does hurt from time to time.. Plus sometime it just FUN to argue and he is ALWAYS game..

 

This site has been very helpful to me also. I enjoy the monthly pictures of everyone's work the most. I also love show pictures in Kent's Corner. The tutorials are great (except lacking picts.) Beggars cant be choosers. Its a great site. I don't do FB or any of that stuff so I cant compare.

 

Speaking of the pictures, mine are simply lost. I refuse to pay to retrieve them and being out of business, I can't recreate them. Guess you'll just have to depend on reading comprehension.

 

Well, that is basically what us old farts had to do with the Northwestern School of Taxidermy course isn't it? As I recall there were only sketches of how to proceed, and very few of them at that.

 

I always enjoyed Sunday morning questions,I read them over and over still,that had a ton of info.

 

This site is really where us taxidermists should be. People like to use farce book because it's more accessible to their clients, and I get that, but the political climate in the world has us in a holding cell awaiting execution on that platform. They are already censoring our photos. As far as people answering questions, if you want a certain persons opinion on something, simply name the person in the post or shoot them a message and ask them if they wouldn't mind chiming in. Socializing 101 isn't every Taxidermists forte', and one has to have a thick skin to interact on any forum. I have had exactly what Rick has said in the back of my mind for a while now. Come back.

On Facebook I usually know who I am talking to, they are not hiding behind some random name.

Rick I love you man but who cares what name you use? People that use this site get used to the names that are used and figure out in sort order who can be trusted.
As far as offering people methods or answers on how to do things I always feel like I'm plagiarizing. Rick out of the week long class I took with you there was two things that are a big time savings for me that I use all the time. Now when people ask how to do something is it proper for me to tell them these things you showed me?
I used to visit here daily and now I'm down to weekly. Don't really know why I don't visit as often. I do look at and comment on thing on Facebook but as other have said it's allot different. I still come here for the "correct" answer.

Ralph, plagiarism has gotten a bad name from the media and political correctness. No idea is original and once you accept information you've paid for or been given, it's your information. If you want to attribute that, then go for it, but I found 50 years ago there are more ways than one to skin a cat with the same results. Hell, at my age, I have a tough time remembering if someone actually told me how to do something or I learned it from having screwed it up numerous times.

One thing that I think has hurt this site is the format. Unless you manually (is that right about the netherworld of electronic technology?) choose to see all the new additions that you haven't looked at, you're going to get just the top (10) that have gotten comments. Of those "10", 6 are going to be political and 4 are going to be "For Sale".
In the good old days, "For Sale" and "Wanted" were icon driven pages. If the format eliminated those along with the "Politics", many of us wouldn't be willowing through the chaff to get to legitimate questions. Ken Edwards probably had the most user friendly, easily accessible site on the Internet in the first couple of years. Then everyone wanted to be spoon fed and this last group who took over the formatting have simply screwed the pooch in my opinion. (And remember, bitching is a Constitutional right.)

 

This site is what it is, and never will be what it was. Facebook killed it. I think the only way to revive this site would be to eliminate the general public/ potential customers. Make the whole site only visible to members. A learning/discussion site for taxidermist only.

Who decides who’s a taxidermist or what exactly is a taxidermist?

 

Just members like the current events section. Thinking more on it, maybe just adding some additional category would draw more interest. I have always thought a Critique section that is only view able to members would be good. Beginners will post looking for a critique. But not many seasoned taxidermist are going to put up a picture to get picked apart knowing the customer could see it.
It would be nice if advice on how to fix the mistakes would be added to the critique

 

I said in another post that the GHOTM thread is a great bellwether for the pulse of this site basically,.or simply quality guys posting great work even in individual threads. I belong to various forums related to multiple interest...I simply like the way information is presented etc,...I'm not really an active facebooker. Something folks like to see when they land on a forum is great work posted by knowledgeable individuals,...that's why they are here.

Rick I think the best thing you personally could do to bring people back is to post an occasional mount. I'm not saying take time to post everything you do,..but at least one a month or every few weeks,.(I have no idea how many you do). Also get your buddy Yox posting a few if he is still in the game,...etc,...you know many more talented artist than me..I can't think of another single forum I'm in where there aren't great makers/artist/woodworkers/gun builders etc,..consistently posting. It makes a huge difference and people want to see it.

When new people get here and ask questions despite the knee jerk reaction to do it,..the veterans around here who are involved should at least offer a short answer along with suggesting "search the archives". This industry is constantly changing and solutions to questions that have been asked a 100x can evolve a little. If you don't have people asking questions and knowledgeable guys/gals answering them,...you have no forum.

Don't have much to say about the politics and such other than if your going to allow it ok,..I don't think it's a horrible idea..but be sure any bickering and such related to that or the industry associations is kept in it's appropriate box and,....any bickering/debating outside of that on a "how to issue"should be moderated. Posters need to present information on how they do things and let that be that....
