Proof Shipping Is A Rip Off By Some Suppliers!

Anytime you purchase one mannikin. you are going to pay through the nose for it. I rarely ever purchase less than a thousand dollars worth of merchandise at a time. This gives me a discount to offset the shipping charges. Yes, there is a variation between suppliers...welcome to the "free-enterprise" system.

 

I'm sorry but you have proof of nothing. If you get on UPS or Fedx sites (however it was sent) and run the numbers of the dimensions of the boxes, weight and the origination and destination zip codes, THEN you have something to compare. Until then it is simple speculation.
Take that same box and weight, and calculate shipping charges based on sending it back to both supplier zip codes and see where you are at. The fact that one was light and one heavy doesn't mean squat. Until then, you are making a post that influences peoples opinions that is not based on facts.
Dimensional sizes of a box are what determines most of the freight charges not the weight. Take a 20x15x 32 box and put one deer head in it and take the same box and put 40lbs of whatever in it and the charges don't change when going to and from the same zip codes. The dimensional total cubic inches determine pricing until you get over the magic maximum number of pounds and then shipping costs once again start increasing. Also shipping distance is not a total indicator of charges. The locality to major hubs etc influence the pricing.

Taxidermy suppliers are not the enemy here.

Send it back to them for the same price. I bet you can't.

 

Can’t beat Matuska. There very fair and pass the shipping deal they get to their customer. I try to keep my McKenzie Supply to a bear minimum.

 

Though this may be true, I think the more important point here, in this case is... the candy that is sent out with each shipment.

I just realized that it has been two years since I have ordered from Matuska since I have retired, so I assume that they still ship a little package of sweetness with your order.

As I agree with the $1000 order for discounts, they wanted $650 to ship my last big order . I got a trucking company to bring same order for $165 . I also had a turkey done for me from Tim Jordon in PA, he tried his best to get it to me different ways , I told him to just box and ship so he boxed it up and because of size UPS wanted $268 to ship it . I told him I’ll drive the 3 hours to get it and drop off some bears to be rugged out . Shipping is unreal . I’ve heard Amazon is looking to start a shipping company itself kinda thing, we will see

So I placed a pretty good order today with Mckenzie, and I ask how can you prove to me you don’t add on to the cost of shipping, she said , for me to measure and weigh the box when it gets here then call UPS and ask what it would cost to ship said box , using same address . She said that will prove we don’t charge extra. She then told me there is a new shipping charge of $24.50 being added by UPS for things like clays and liquid weighing over 50 lbs per box . It’s getting ridiculous, we all need to add $25 to each mount just to cover shipping cost .

 

I figured into the cost of a mount what it would cost if I ordered everything individually, even though I never ordered supplies and such individually. I based this cost off of McKenzies shipping prices. So, the cost of the eyes plus what it cost to ship just the eyes. If the eyes cost $15 and the shipping was approx. 18.50, the eyes were $34. Ears, form, thread, hide paste, to and from tannery, hanger, etc. Same thing. I added the shipping cost to each item. That cost went up every year. It could be several hundred dollars in a deer head just to cover shipping.

The only problem was if their shipping rates went up during the middle of the season. I would wait to raise the prices until the end of the year when shipping, supplies, materials and services increased and I gave myself a cost of living increase as well as a pay increase beyond cost of living each year.

 

I believe some do, however now that I ship, I have learned every inch does matter-so instead of using a standard box I will cut it and improvise to save my customers on shipping. I can do this, a lot of people can’t take the time to do this. Also they may just use an average to charge versus actual charge. They may also include packing in found their quote. I would call them personally. I get angry over shipping cost, but it took me awhile to play the game. Put some pressure on them-lol.

 

The whole time I had my Taxidermy business, I never once paid for shipping. Year after year, not once. So, I was never angry about shipping.

Then I retired and started doing little things for myself, I had to pay for shipping. It doesn't make me happy, I just realized it is what it is and if I want to do anything fun in life, I'm going to have to pay for it in some way or form. Free shipping is a plus when I order from a company like Amazon, however, even then you have to order over a certain amount to get it.

In today's world everybody expects cheap or "free shipping" (No such thing). Look at many companies - including some of our suppliers and how cheap shipping is with some and not with others. Hence all the shipping charges posts! Then, just for giggles compare the prices of their products. I simply do not believe - even with volume discounts that some of the things I've received could be shipped as cheaply as they were. These companies are probably shipping at a loss in the shipping column with many of their products. They make up for it with the profit margins on their products. Other businesses do the opposite (or BOTH) though (eg Gray's) lol. IMO the seemingly higher shipping charges are because the others haven't caught up to today's world and marketing angle. And that is to bury some of those shipping charges into the cost of the products so that they can offer to ship so "cheaply". You gotta look at the total costs...

 

Rudy from OTS did a great article on this and he showed us the rip off in shipping costs. He did same weight , location etc and showed and hate to say it but he showed how Mckinze’s is overpriced to their clients.
Their not the only ones as I have a client that has ship stuff for me to do at one price ( ships from their company)and my shipping is almost tripled , plus it’s less weight.
In all some companies do pass a saving on to us as others don’t. Just more to think about. I look at it like this shipping costs are added to my work..
