Cleaning Smoke Stained Antlers

I'm not familiar with every cleaner you've tried, but I've used comet with pretty good success. You'll most likely need to use steel whool on them & then re-stain them.

 

If all else fails, I'd try soaking them in acetone or a dawn soap and ammonia solution heated up a little with a bucket heater. The dawn and ammonia works well in getting odor out of antlers, it might work with the smoke stains.

 

I had a rack a few years back that I had to use sand paper on then wash, dry & re-stain.

 

Hi, I seen your post, and wonder what you stain the antlers with? Mine are on a mount, so cant remove from the deer, they look alittme yellow, my husband smokes, so after 11 years, they're alittle more yellow, or just wipe down with something?

Are you sure it is yellow stain from smoke and it is not a clear coating that was put on the antlers that then yellowed?

 

That person hasn't been on here since Feb 12, 2015. As mentioned above, they may have been clear coated and they are now turning yellow. Turn the head upside down so you don't drip anything on the fur. Try spraying them down with Windex and wiping with paper towels. If it is nicotene, it will come off along with a lot of dirt. If no change, try rubbing a small area with a clean white rag dipped in acetone. If it is clear coat, there is a good chance it will remove it. If the rack was painted/stained, the acetone might remove that too and they will need to be recolored.

 

I bought some old antlers that were that were shellacked and discolored . Nothing would take it off but paint remover. Did not effect the color of the antlers .

 

Not saying it will help your problem ; but if you have to recolor than you have nothing to lose .
