What's Wrong With This Picture?

The mount is magnificent with some very artistic quality going on. There is NOTHING wrong with the taxidermy work and I'm sure the client got exactly what he asked for. So what's wrong.

I don’t believe hyenas would ever chase a Rino like that , Rino would kick their azzes lol. And all the rocks don’t belong .

Is the tree native to the area? Are the hyenas and rhino in the same area?

    :)

    All good answers so far.

13 Point. Rocks do look a little out of place. Hyenas are opportunists and have been known to chase about every animal.

Kerby. They do reside in the same areas of Africa, but you might be onto something with the tree.

Jordan. Agree most artist sign at the bottom right, but I don't know if that makes it wrong or not.

George, I will take a swing at it and I may be totally off base. I would say the composition is off (not the taxidermy work) as many predators, even lions for example, will attack larger game from the rear to avoid the business end of a rhino in this case. Unlike a lion, a hyena doesn't have the claws to latch on to the animal nor do they have the jawset (teeth) to strangle a rhino. They normally take chunks out of the back of the animal or try to disembowel their prey. They have to eat quickly before the pride comes and cleans up on their kill. Looking at the composition, the one hyena probably wouldn't be at its neck. They would be attacking the hind quarters. Also the Rhino would not be exposing himself to the hyenas and would turn to fight them. Couldn't imagine the Rhino winning a foot race against a pack of hyenas.

    Just my thoughts.

the rhino would stomp the crap out of the hyena's, to me that's the main thing wrong here.

LOL Museum Man, 13 point, and I agree. Rhinos notoriously attack ANY intruder and a tough old warrior like that one would be avoided even by hyenas. ( Remember "Lion King"? "Who you callin' Upidstay?")
My apologies to the artist for the name not appearing. The work is breathtakingly exquisite.

You certainly did 13 point. I tried editing the post 2 or 3 times and can only blame old. Fat fingers on a tiny keypad. I just noticed it and all the misspelled words. I fixed it I HOPE.

Well I see all of my years of watching Animal Planet has paid off a bit - lol! I think you'd be hard pressed to see any adult Rhino running from Hyenas. Rhino's are too aggressive to back down to something this small. It would be more realistic if it were a stand-off scene as that could be possible if these hyenas are VERY hungry (and there's many more not in the scene too!) But, even that would probably end in the 20 hyenas giving up. You'd need a fairly significant injury for this to happen I believe. Who knows, maybe the butthole is torn open on the rhino that we cannot see? I doubt it though because that would be offensive to most viewers. But, imo THAT would be the ONLY situation where something like this could happen (And even that is a stretch! I believe most adult Rhino's would stand their ground even injured and not even perceive these little guys as much of a threat)

First thing is, that I didn't get that pay check and the second from the perspective of the picture, either the rhino chit that tree out or it ran through it, Regardless, it is still a very dynamic and well done piece.

I have always hated hyenas. Little lazy thieves. I always cheer when a lion catches a hyena after thy try to steal their meal.

I have a bigger problem with the rocks than the tree. With their crappy eyesight they'd avoid running into terrain like that I'd think - even if there was terrain like that for them to run to. But again, I don't see n adult Rhino running from these three little twerps in the first place!

  15. I have seen hyenas get after some pretty large game. As for the lead hyena. I think its where it should be as there is always a predator trying to head the prey off, just like a cowboy bull dogging a steer.

My step son and daughter has raised about every animal expect elephants. I ask him what he thought of the scene. Wild animals will run blindly to get away for other animals that are pestering them. While the rhino might not be the hyenas dinner. Sometimes pack animals will play a bit of of a game seeing what they can get away with.

  16. I want to add for those who have never lived around cattle and domestic city dogs. Those city dogs will pack up and rip ears from cattle. I dint see why a hyena would not grab an ear of any animal. Coyotes, do, fifi your little foo foo dog will.

The scene is depicting a scene that isn't impossible in real life, just improbable. That being said, I think the over all scene is pleasing to look at and with most people not learned in the fine art of taxidermy or animal behavior, any discrepancies can be over looked since it can be celebrated as a technical job well done.

If the rhino was a warthog, young hoofed animal like a wildebeest or even a lion it would be a much better depiction.

But, if all you have is some hyenas and a rhino and an urge to have a chase scene, you gotta work with what you got.

I think showcasing the mean character common with rhinos, maybe he should be chasing the hyenas.

AZ~Rich " Africa" never fails to satisfy

Nicely done piece for sure but as said above the two major inconsistencies are the rock piles which rhino would normally avoid and the plausibility of hyena giving a high speed chase to an adult rhino IMO. The tree appears to resemble an acacia which are native and abundantly present throughout Africa. However, from what we view you cannot know the condition of the rhino. It might be either be sick, weakened or injured; in which cases hyenas might be emboldened as depicted.

There is nothing wrong with any aspect of this mount. It's a fantastic mount that few taxidermists could pull off as well. The alterations on the Rhino alone would kick 90 percent of taxidermists out of the game. A +.
