The skin mount part is easy enough but casting those damn fins looks like a night mare.

Why cast them? This carp isn't that big. Much of the grease is in the fin butts. Personally, I would cast the head but that's it. Of course I've never done one but I suspect those fins are similar to other carp fins. JMO

On common carp I cast them but I do have 2 goldfish, coy fish with fins like this that I am not casting. We,ll see.

I'm sure there will be a lot of shrinkage using the real fins. To rebuild or not depends on how picky one is. I don't think any customers would notice the shrinkage. Unless you pointed it out. JMO.

My plan is cast head in alginate
Use real fins , I know lots of opinions on this one
But grease is no concern to me, I use carbolic acid “phenol”
When you drop a shin in you can see the oils boils out of it,Down side this stuff is bad news if not used with precautions

Even considered doing a full cast in alginate then skin mount
Make a cast of alginate cast then perfect body and a cast available
    Still up in the air

That certainly is a unique specimen! If given the chance I believe that would be a custom Replica for me. Molding those fins isn't that scary they are thick and fleshy and big all the way around for sure. Stuff like this I let the customer decide what they want; if I think it's just too cool to pass up I'll make a mold of it to keep.
Please post a pic when it's done!

    After $250 worth of silicone
Can of bondo and smooth on 300
    We got this one started
What a surprise to see what I had when I thawed it out
He shot this one at 7:30 on night, then threw it in the back of his pick up, 6 hour ride he next day he finally puts it in the freezer
So needless to say it was 100% repo
Put silicon molds in pressure pot to make supper thin 2/3 of the way down
