I am looking for a damaged whitetail cape that has been tanned. I am looking to attempt my first mount, and don't want to ruin a nice hide. I prefer if the damages on the neck or body somewhere not the face... I'm new and I have no clue what I'm doing, but it's time to get my hands dirty! let me know what you got. Thanks, txt or call at 7343833280

If you want to get your hands dirty get a green/raw cape and learn to flesh first

I would like to but all the tanners in my area are closed due to covid and I have free time now.

I’m confused , what does the tannerys being closed have to do fleshing, learn to flesh then salt it till tannery opens , not trying to give you a hard time , just saying if you can’t flesh correctly then you will have a real hard time doing Taxidermy

Like I said brand new, first project. Stumbling into it, thanks for the direction. Do you have any capes that need to be fleshed? Also some recommendations on tools would be great.

Hang in there Jake. Unfortunately on this web site there is often someone who has to make comments. Most are good comments, however there is always the guy who knows everything and then the guy who is confused?/#^/!?*? If I had a WT cape I would give you one, but I am in mule deer country and do very few WT deer. Hang in there, someone will find you a cape for a good price. Any questions? Give me a PM.

I’m not sure why you say this , I try to help all I can , saying I’m confused is because I didn’t understand what he was stating, letting him know fleshing Is a important thing to know in Taxidermy is not busting or discouraging him . If I had a cape I’d give it to him , if he was close to me I would invite him to my shop to help him in every way possible, as I’ve offered to others , I don’t see you posting in the beginners to help anyone . Dude you are so off base on this its crazy .

Because he asked for a cape, not opinions about what you would do. If I was wanting to try my first mount and had no access to a tannery I would be anxious to find a cape that was tanned so I could give it a try. I recall 40 years ago thinking about my first mount. I was very anxious and wanted to do something right now! Sorry if I offended you. No hard feelings.

Jake where are you located? For your first mount might I suggest a different approach, don't look for a damaged cape, all that will do is give you more issues to deal with and may discourage you. Look for an average cape at a reasonable price say a 7 x 18 or so without issues. That way you have less to make look correct.

Jake look up east coast capes I believe. They had some from $75 -$300. Good place to find a decent cape to start with

nelsondeerfarm me and THE BUCKMAN !!!

I believe I have an adult doe and a yearling buck, both were killed by me, tanned by me. They may have some holes that need sewed but should be pretty decent capes. The buck was killed last November, the doe was killed 3 years ago. Would you be interested? I will sell them dirt cheap if your interested. PM me.
